Series of problems with 323, can I recover my data?
« on: January 28, 2011, 08:02:55 PM »

I have a DNS-323 with 2 Hitachi Deskstar 500GB drives, not sure of the firmware... I believe it's either 1.08 or 1.09.  The only problem I've had with it in the few years that I've owned it is that both of the drive LEDs died about a year after I bought it and so I can't see the drives status from the box.

Then a couple of months ago the whole thing just stopped working.  I noticed the power supply LED was not on so I presumed that it had failed.  At first I could not find a compatible power supply (THANK YOU D-LINK FOR NOT RESPONDING TO ANY OF MY EMAILS ASKING HOW I COULD GET ONE!!) so I tried to put the drives in my computer running Windows XP SP3, but it would not power up with ONE of the drives connected, but WOULD power up with the OTHER connected... failed drive???

So with the good drive connected, I could not read it, could not map to it, but the Disk Management showed what appeared to be 3 volumes on it.

Well now I can't access the data so I go back to searching for a power supply for the DNS-323.  So after finding a compatible power supply, I got it to power up and tried it with each and then both drives.  With either both drives or just the "good" drive in the box, it powers up but the power button blinks constantly, and the network light goes from rappid blinking to solid for a few seconds, back to blinking, then off, then blinking, etc.

With just the "bad" drive in, it powers up for a few seconds with just the power button blinking, then powers off.

In any case, I cannot connect to the box via the Easy Search Utility or the web based utility.

I'm not sure now if it's a problem with one or both of the drives, or the box too.

I can't really afford to buy a new DNS-323 just to see if that was the problem, so is there a way I can recover the data from the one drive that appears to be functional by connecting it directly to my computer?

Thank you,
Ben

You need http://www.ext2fsd.com to read the drives in Windows.

My 323 seems to have died completely. Will not power on or anything. Can I remove the hard drive and use it in my computer to retrieve the data? Or do i need to use this app too? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Well, if yours is like mine and some of the others on the forum, you need to use the app to get to the drive partition.  I simply ran a power cable, SATA cable, booted up, ran the app which allowed me to assign a drive letter to it... everything is accessible now!

Good luck!

Keep in mind if it's a raid volume (specifically a stripe) you are going to need to put 2 together

Had an issue recently where my nas power supply died, and corrupted my data on one hard-drive and then formatted the other one when i booted it back up eventually, which of course meant there was no way to recover my data lol.
