Lost backup jobs
« on: September 22, 2008, 03:32:07 AM »

I established some back-up jobs, which had worked for several days (although someof the jobs backed up everything every day, but that is a separate topic). I had rebooted the unit at least one since setting up the jobs. My DNS-321 went down when there was a brief power outage. I left it off for a couple days, then moved it to a different location, which required unplugging the unit. When it came back up, all of my backup jobs were missing. Why?

Sounds like the data got written to the drives, but didn't get "committed" to the file allocation table. Not good.

Okay, so what do I do about it?  I haven't gotten around to reentering the backup jobs, but the DNS-321 is now on a UPS.

Are you running RAID1? If so, there may be another explination. Perhaps only of your two drives was being backed up to. When the unit got rebooted, the drive with the data didn't come online, but the other one did instead.

Again, if it's RAID1, try booting up the unit with one drive at a time to see if you can recover the lost data.

Not running RAID, just standard hard drives. RAID looked to be too unreliable, fromt he comments by others.

Forgive if I'm wrong - but - I'm not quite certain that the two of you are discussing the same thing ....

Bill - are you talking about missing data, or is it the "backup job" in the scheduler that has disappeared?

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two.

The data is still there. The JOB is missing from the scheduler, and is therefore not happening any more.

Yes that is the case if the DNS-321 is not powered down correctly the scheduler jobs will be lost in the configuration. We are currently working to resolve this issue.
