I think I've discovered the source of the problem and found a workaround - at least for my system...

I too experienced the inability to save any settings and every save attempt resulted in a reboot.  I have 1.21/A3.  I suspected that the problem was related to my saving the current configuration before the 1.21 upgrade, updating the firmware to 1.21 and then reloading the saved configuration.

What I did was go to Tools/System/Restore Factory Defaults.  Once rebooted I manually reconfigured the router, abandoning the saved configuration settings.  When I did this everything worked again.  I am now able to save settings without getting the reboot.

So far so good...

The problem is turning off wireless, then saving settings. Try that.

I had experienced a similar problem (firmware 1.21). The router seemed to get into an infinite loop of reboots. I lost access to change its configuration (it reboots before I can manage to send in any change).

It happened right after I activated the *Automatic Time Configuration*, Enable NTP Server and leave NTP Server Used as ca.pool.ntp.org then save the configuration. The configuration prior to this change was working good.

I managed to get it to stop rebooting by unplugging the connection to the cable modem, power off/on, then reconfigure it without the *Automatic Time Configuration*.  It is now working good again.

I guess I will live with the router time slightly off!

Was there ever a fix for this? I'm seeing the same problem, I have a new A3 running 1.21. I upgraded it to 1.21 from the out of the box firmware and didn't restore any previous settings. Any change I make results in a reboot and the settings not being applied.

I can fix it by reseting it back to factory defaults. This works fine then I make all my changes and reboot and it's fine I can turn wireless on and off without issue. But the first time I make a change that requires a reboot after that first initial reboot it's back to being broken again.

In 1.21b10 13 November 2008 (currently at ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Gateway/dir655/Firmware/dir655_firmware_121.zip), I'm not getting router reboots.  I'm getting wireless radio restarts.  The number of things that trigger this behavior is limited, and the symptom is probably only noticed by those configuring wirelessly.

For example, changing from N+G+B to G+B then Save Settings restarts the wireless radio without warning, but doesn't reboot the system.

In a previous version -- perhaps two months ago -- I couldn't make a change without losing wireless the wireless connection. My impression at the time was that the router was rebooting, whether it was in fact I'm not sure. But now I'm sure that it's the wireless restarting only as the router log is not reset to empty as it is when a reboot occurs.

Don't turn wireless off fixed it for me.

This latest firmware appears to be working better. I made all my changes, rebooted, turned wireless on and off, made some more changes then rebooted, then tried to make changes again and was successful.

Thanks..

Having the same problem on the EU version of 1.21b05.
This one is official on the D-Link Support-site.
Same problem on both HW-ver. A2 and A3.

I think it's quite logical that wireless restarts with certain changes, good thing that you don't need a complete reboot for it like in the early days. I have not yet experienced any sudden restarts on my 1.21 firmware.

There's something wrong with how 1.21 restarts after a change -- it's not the normal D-Link (Reboot Now, Reboot Later) scheme.  This seems to be a bug-rich environment.

I strongly disagree, funchords.
Simply because none of the issues affect me (1.21) and I have no curious reboots. Not all changes require a reboot, some just require a wireless restart or neither. And if the error/bug is generic I would be suffering from it too, wouldn't you say?

I do think there is something wrong with the firmware flash routine though, which seems to leave old code in place (or misplaced).

You're right.

I'd be cool with the wireless restart behavior (that is what is happening in my case), but only if it gave me some warning.  Since I'm configuring via a wireless connection, the next thing that happens is that I lose connectivity without acknowledgement that my setting was even saved.  It's clumsy.  It doesn't seem to be functionally wrong, however, I agree.

Also agree.
