DIR-615 not connecting to internet
« on: January 30, 2011, 12:33:06 PM »

So I'm trying to help a friend with her DIR-615 router.  I've been testing it out at home where I use another D-Link with no problem.  What I'm seeing is that I can connect to the router (wired or wireless) but no internet connection is reported.  I believe I have also tried pinging a web site by IP address alone with no luck.  (I'll have to try that again as I can't remember if I did that or not.)

ISP: Version DSL
Router: DIR-615, hardware version B2, firmware version 2.20

I've tried turning modem and router off, waiting a few minutes, then turning on modem and letting it connect then turning on the router.  That doesn't help.  As best I can tell the two routers have the same settings.  The ISP is using Dynamic IP (DHCP) connection.

Any suggestions for debugging this some more?  Could the router be malfunctioning?  I can log in to it via a browser just fine.

Thanks...

What ISP service does he have? DSL or cable? I presume the direct connect to the ISP Modem with a PC works?

Is this the first time this router has been set up? If not might try doing a factory reset to clear any prior configurations out. Need to log into the router and make sure the Status/Device Info/Wan section is getting an IP address from the ISP and getting Gateway and Primary and 2ndary DNS ip addresses. The DNS Addresses should be filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual if there not. Turn off any Advanced DNS services if you see this option. Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll take a look tonight.

I'm trying to connect with Verizon DSL.  I've reset the router (using the button on the back).  I've tried to make sure all the settings are the same as my other D-Link router which works.

If your using DSL, do you know if your DSL modem is a stand alone modem or does it have a built in router? It's preferred that if these modems do have a built in router, to bridge the modem and then set up the router for the DSL account information, usually using PPPoE and let the router do all of the traffic handling between the ISP modem and devices.

Thank you, those are all good suggestions.  No, I'm using a stand-alone router and I took your advice to make sure the settings were the same.  It turns out what it needed was setting the MAC address of the new router to be the same as the old.  I'm betting my Verizon DSL did not like the sudden change of device on my end so fooling it allowed the connection.  It may be that if I left the modem off long enough for the DSL to time out it would accept the new device eventually.

All you need to do is probably call up your ISP and explaing to them that you have a new device on your system and would they help you make sure that the MODEM and the 615 Router is connected and accepted on there system. I'm sure they will help you get it all set up well and working correctly. Let us know how it goes.

You will need to call your  ISP for help on bridging the ISP modem if it has this feature.
