No Internet connection
« on: October 09, 2008, 12:29:19 AM »

DSL connection, sbc yahoo.  DHCP.  windows firewall disabled, and no anti virus running. Noticed a new firmware, I currently have 1.20, I also tried below situation with the firmware it was shipped with, same results.

I am running the quick set up.  I connect fine when the modem is not in-line, as soon as I put it in line it does some checks and tells me that I have no internet connection.  If I log onto the modem set up it shows that there is an i.p. address from the modem, and all the lights light up like I should have a connection.  Aside from the fact that I cannot access the internet, everything looks like it is working, if I immediately disconnect the DIR - 655 and plug my modem to my computer w/o rebooting I have internet immediately.

Thanks for your help

Just a question what type of configuration did you do on your router. Did your Internet Service Provider gave you a username and password in connecting to the Internet. If they gave you a username and password. Try configuring your router for PPPoE connection but if not try to configure the router for Dynamic connection.

Hi cheeseburger25,

You forgot to remove Power from the Modem, itself, and reapply the Power after the Modem is connected to the Router.

That or clone the MAC of the PC being used.

I tried this with the same result.

I also tried this, but I tried it when it was the older version of the firmware, do you think I would have more success with the newer firmware?

NOTE:  I do not use a PPPoE, I have a "always on" type of set up, once the modem is plugged in the connection to the internet is available.

I tried a few more things without any luck.  I set my computer as a "DMZ", didn't work.  I tried locking down the WAN speed to all 3 speeds.  I went to the status logs and it shows the blocks happening, but it makes little sense to me.  My computer is 192.168.0.199, hopefully someone out there knows what could be blocking the connection.

ICMP type 3 are supposed to be blocked. If you're not able to get online, then power cycle the modem and the router for 5 minutes.
Then check the status page of the router and reply with the IP address.

There is a great deal of information that is being pased back and forth but I would like to get some detail on the setup, I.E modem model and manufacturer, wether or not the modem has more then one type of possible conifugration, and wether or not the modem has its own DHCP system inside of it.. I look forward to hearing back from you asap so I can help you resolve this.

I have a feeling it has to do with the fact I have an "always on" DSL type of connection.
The second cut/paste is my current modem info when connected fine.  The modem is a speedstream 4100.

Something else odd I noticed, the MAC address of my DIR-655 comes up with 00:1E:58:F2:4A:A3, the box it came in and the bottom of the router say 00:1E:58:F2:4A:A4.  Why is that?

the MAC address can be cloned from your PC on its initial setup so its possible that the mac you see is that of your PC when it was cloned

One adress is for the WAN connection, the other is for the LAN connection.

I have a feeling it has to do with the fact I have an "always on" DSL type of connection.
The second cut/paste is my current modem info when connected fine.  The modem is a speedstream 4100.

Let's regroup ourselves here. It might be something simple you're overlooking. Let's first establish what type of connection you have. Is it a standard DSL service? Or do you have an upgraded "static ip" connection? If it's a standard DSL connection please continue below. If it is in fact static, contact your ISP and get the IP Address/Default Gateway/DNS information.

Now, if it's the standard DSL connection let's start with the modem. Look at it. The DSL light should be solid. Now, the 4th light is the "Internet" light. If it is solid, that means your modem is not bridged. You will then login to the router configuration page and setup the router as a dynamic connection and then power cycle it for a few minutes. On the status tab, under the WAN section. You should receive an IP address similar to: 192.168.1.64. Check your internet connection and it should work just fine.

Now, if the internet light is off on the modem; This means your modem is in fact bridged. Therefore you setup the router as a PPPoE connection. From there you just login to the router configuration page and select "pppoe." Type your username and password given to you by your ISP. Save the settings and power cycle the router. Now, check the status tab under the WAN section you should receive a public IP address such as; 69.x.x.x. If the IP address is all 0.0.0.0s then press the "connect" button just above the 0's. If still, you receive all 0s check the log to the left. If you receive a listing "PADT Tag Error" that means the username and password under the PPPoE setting are incorrect.

I apologize if this seems obvious, but if you encounter a problem with any of the aforementioned steps; post it here. There are common solutions to every problem you may encounter.

Best of luck,

Russell
