Terrible network connectivity over wireless
« on: January 31, 2011, 08:09:58 AM »

RevB, firmware 2.00NA.

After reading some of the posts in this forum I switched to wireless G only because my wireless connection was being dropped. This is really not an acceptible workaround since I bought the router for the N capability.  But I am still having problems.  Web pages take forever to load - sometimes the pages only partially load.  So I decided to ping the router over wireless.  I'm guessing the average time is about 100ms and I'm getting a lot of time outs.

When I am plugged in directly to the router with an ethernet cable, my ping times are <1ms.

What's going on?

What is your ISP service? DSL or cable?

Is advanced dns service enabled? Its recommended to turn this off and use the ISP DNS addresses locate under Status/Device Info/Wan section. Copy and paste these into Setup/Internet/Manual. Make sure DNS relay is enabled if you have this option.

Are there any cordless phones in the house? These can cause interference.
What happens with single mode N?

I am also having a similar issue.  I've got the first revision of the hardware.  I have tried changing channels on the router, but still get the wireless dropping connection under heavy load.

I know it isn't my ISP because machines connected through ethernet stay up and connected (no interruptions), just wireless machines.

We do have cordless phones, but I'm sorry, just having cordless phones in the house should not keep me from using a wireless-N router.  Besides, I've tried different channels with no luck.

D-Link has to have a solution to this.

I'm on Windstream DSL.

The advanced dns service is disabled.

I have Panasonic cordless phones but I never had this issue with my DIR-625.  [I bought the 655 because I wanted the Gig Ethernet ports for my media center to stream to my 2 xboxes.]  Both laptops are getting good singal strength.  I also have a DAP-1522 in my home office.  It says it's getting between 89% - 93% signal strength from the 655.

I did not have a DNS relay option.

I have not tried single mode N because I have 2 laptops that are G only.

I'm Sorry but having cordless phones in the house that run on the same or near frequency can and will cause interference to the routers that use the same frequencies. Also other WiFi routers in the general area can have the same effect.

What happens with a single mode G or N? Does it still disconnect? You can use Mixed mode G and N. Theres not use for broadcasting A or B since most devices now days are G and N. Test with out any security for a short period and let us know what happens.

I switched over to N mode only.  I'm getting better ping times, but it's still averaging about10ms.  The timeouts have decreased, but still occurring.

My laptop can see 23 other wireless networks.  It says I have good signal strength.  The "site survey" feature of my DAP-1522 says I'm getting between 89% and 93% for my wireless network.

How do I tell if my neighbors wireless networks are interfering?

BTW - my cordless phones operate at 1.9GHz.  Can this cause be eliminated?

Click the link in my above post, its a program to see what wireless networks are operating in your area.  It will tell you what channels they are on and their signal strength.

Sorry - I didn't realize it was a link in your previous response davevt31.

So I am running the tool now.  Over a period of about 25 minutes, this tool has detected about 55 access points.  My signal is between -50dB and -45dB.  The next 2 closest networks are between -60dB and -55dB.  All other networks are below -70dB.

Of the networks it found I am definitely the only one on Channel 2.  Everyone else is mostly on 6 and 11.

Does this rule out interference?

I would say it shows a lot of interference in your area.  Just because the are on different channels doesn't mean they don't interfere, they are all in the same bandwidth area.  If you are the only one on channel 2 , you might want to set that channel and turn off autoscan.  The way autoscan works, is if the router detects interference on one channel it will move to another one, each time it moves to a new channel the wireless network reboots itself.

It would be interesting to see what you get when you regress back to Mode A and or B. I presume that the APs in your area are running mostly G. Wondering if A and B modes are experiencing the same.

I turned Autoscan off, set the device to ch2, and dropped down to B.  (Device doesn't even offer A mode).

Anyway - same results in B-only mode.  Going to try to wrap my house in tin foil next.  I'll let you know how it turns out after my wife divorces me  ;)

Try Chl 11. Sounds like alot of interference from others. Same thing happens on N only too?

Hope this can be figured out before the wife wraps you up in tin foil, hehe.

I tried Ch 11 w/ B only and it was the worst yet.  I got more timeouts than responses when I did a ping -t to my router.

I switched back to Ch2 & N-only.  Average ping times are 49ms over a period of about 20 minutes.  I'm going to wait until this evening & run the tests again after my neighbors get home.  Performance seems to be the worst in the evening.

I think it's these blasted Cisco routers that are causing a lot of the problems.  I see (via inSSIDer) at least 4 of them in area that have 'guest' networks.  So 4 Cisco devices equate to 8 wireless networks.

So do you all agree that's what's going here: Interference from my neighbors wireless networks?

I wouldn't be surprised that your area is just being hammered by other routers and the main cause of interference for you. Could see if you could contact all of your near by neighbors and work with them to see if the signals and bands could be cleaned up some. Help each other get on specified channels and turn off A and B bands that aren't being used and see if that might help your surrounding area. Worth trying.
