FW 1.13 will not let me change my dns servers
« on: October 16, 2008, 12:27:52 PM »

I tried to swap back to opendns today and no matter what method I use, direct entry or the wizard, the router will not remember the opendsn servers and reverts to the comcast dns servers when it reboots.  Has anybody else noticed this and if so how did you get around it?  Thanks.

Had the same problem myself.

Found that you have to do a hard reset of the Router by holding the reset button in for 30 seconds while it is turned on, then for added measure, while the button is still pushed in, pull the power plug from the unit itself, not the wall plug.

Wait a minute, then plug it back in.

The router should now be reset back to factory defaults including the password and you should have no problems changing anything.

It seems that the recent talk about this problem is right on the mark.
   - If you restore the configuration file after flashing, then shortly after, you will find yourself unable to change any settings and other problems seem to arise from this also.

But if you change the settings manually, then things seem to run better. As to how much better, I've yet to find out how much so.

Just curious, what browser are you using?

I don't know about PuffnStuff, but the problem with my router persisted no matter what browser I used and no matter what system I used.

Incidentally, Systems Security is a specialty of mine and I take extreme measures to make sure that my network and all the systems on it stay clean and are kept fully updated.

I think I spoke a little too soon as to using a Hard Reset to fix the problem.

Roughly about a week ago I used this to fix this problem with my router.

 - But tonight I found that the same problem is occurring again. But to be more specific, the problem earlier and even now is not just limited to trying to change the DNS servers, the problem is with attempting to make any changes what so ever.

Here at home, I've got a Sony iLink on the back of my Sony Bravia XBR television and tonight I decided I wanted to watch some movies over the iLink.

So I decided to put the Bravia iLink's IP address in DMZ mode in the router.

 - No can do - It won't take. So I tried to make other changes. Nothing will take.

This means that I'll have to do a hard reset again to make any changes. The only thing I don't know is how many hours or days we have before we get locked out of being able to make any configuration changes.

It sounds like you guys have had some bad flashes or something.  But, that's just my opinion.

Try reflashing, and I suggest doing it in the recovery mode (in case a flash goes wrong, or it's corrupted somehow).  Once it's done that, shut it off, and let it sit, and then plug it in, and go about setting it up.  It SHOULD clear all your settings.  At this time, do NOT back it up with old gateway settings, just redo it all.  Yes, I know it's a pain, but it can eliminate any possibility of any corrupted settings, etc that don't quite match up between versions.

This might be a dumb question, but how do I enter recovery mode on these D-Link devices?

While the router is plugged in, hold down the reset button and do not let go.  Wait 10 seconds, and then unplug it.  Keep holding down the reset, and wait about 10 seconds more, and apply power again.  Once you plug it in, access the default gateway address, and you should be at a page where you can only flash the firmware.

Guys I followed the previous instructions except for the part for reconnecting to the router and being at a flash only page.  I had to sift through the menu's to arrive at the firmware page like normal but it let me flash to 1.12.  The last time I tried to roll back it wouldn't let me do it but this method succeeded.  I am restoring my settings manually then will resave them and never touch 1.13 again.

I wonder if this method would allow us to roll back to 1.02?  Somebody wanna try it and let us know if it will skirt the issue of rolling back before the core update?

Could you please describe what you did in detail, seems like I need a specific guide for dummies :(

What I did was:

- Power up the router
- Held in the reset button for about 10sec (when around 8 - 11sec the OLED screen seems to be dark? Right?)
- Pull out the power cord, still holding the reset button
- Holding it for 10secs while the power cord is unplugged
- Then power it up again as I release the reset button?

Then I navigate to 192.168.0.1, on first try it doesn't work as the router was in it's booting process, when I gain access it's the same default page? With all the different tabs working? NO RECOVERY MODE?? :(

Just for fun I tried to flash with 1.12, it claims to be successful but upon reboot it's still this bloody 1.13 firmware?

What do I do wrong? Please help me guys :)
This has to be the worst and most problematic firmware I've ever experienced WHATSOEVER, in my ENTIRE life! Ough, what a nasty firmware this is :(

Proper Crash proceedure is actually much simpler then that..

1. Unplug the router

2. hold down the reset button (no predetermined amount of time)

3. plug the router in (Dont let go of the reset button)

4. Continue to hold the reset for 15 secconds and then let go.

5. you may need to set a static IP on your PC. (192.168.0.99) is acceptable with a default gateway of 255.255.255.0

6. log into the router with 192.168.0.1

7. you should now see a firmware upgrade page

*****NOTE***** this is a hard crash reset and could possible cause your router to DIE all together if there is a hardware problem that is unknown to you.

*****Use this reset with Caution please and thank you*****

Anyone getting this with the dgl-4500? I know older dlink products those methods worked.

When I tried that it took me to the standard log in page.  I had to sift through the menus normally to get to the firmware page and then tell it to load the file.  It did not start up taking me to a special page for flashing.

The 4500 does not do a crash reset. I tried multiple times when trying to go back to 1.02.  Please as a person working for DLink research these things before posting.  If a crash reset did work on the 4500 most of us on here would be back on 1.02.
