If you have 1.03 firmware and you are generally happy with it, then consider going into the Set-Up Tab > Wireless Settings > Manual Wireless Settings (third/bottom option on center page)

Set the Channel Width to Auto 20/40MHz. This should improve the speed of your wireless connnection on the LAN if you were previously on 20Mhz.

If you are using an Intel adapter, you will need to set the Channel Width to 20, as their adapters only operate at this Channel Width.

Does this change the literal band width (frequency spread for communication over)?  Or does it allow adding a second band above/below the first?  I am envisioning something along the idea of  SSB for all the HAMs out there.

The 40 Mhz range is two channels that do not overlap. (e.g. 1 and 6 or 1 and 11, etc. ).
The channels can not be selected by the user.

Minor correction:  The two channels used in 40 MHz mode are n & n + 4 if n < 7, or n & n - 4 if n > 6.  For example, channel 1 & 5 or 7 & 3.

The main/primary channel can be selected by the user (same as in 20 Mhz mode, simply turn off "auto channel scan", and pick your favorite channel from the pull-down menu.  Lycan was correct that the extension channel cannot be selected, as it follows the formula above.

a bad idea -- in my case it picked a channel that had TWO other wifi networks on it.

Auto Channel scan was only put in the router so it would not stomp out your neighbors WiFi .  "friendly wifi"

But I don't like my neighbor, so i keep auto chan scan off.
