Marketing on my DLink Router from DLink
« on: November 01, 2008, 07:06:09 AM »

Okay, this is to formally complain that this is MY router when I buy it.  Not yours.  I never in the future expect to get any more "advertisements" on my router.  My whole household woke up this morning to an "advertisement" for Parental Controls.  Did it come up on my system where I installed the latest bios?  Yes, but it also came up on everyone else computers from browsers to email messages that accept HTML.

Whomever came up with this as a marketing scheme aught to be fired!!!

Stop it.  A router is not the location for "advertisements"!!!

Take it somewhere else!

Do that again and I will not only never buy from you again, I will start telling everyone about your practices and tell them to make sure they don't buy from you.

It has an on/off switch. Use it. It's just a feature, you're choice to use it or not. They've got special places for you people: DD-WRT etc. ;)

So let me get this straight?  You want me to buy it but then turn it off because of the marketing?  Now that is just sick.

The is a check box in the router setup pages to enable/disable the SecureSpot option.  Look on the Advanced tab and on the left side is an entry for the SecureSpot setup page.

A check box that should be OFF by default, not on perhaps?  You know when you start putting stuff like this in the bios of intermediate components on the network that is still just wrong.  It should not be a check box. It, being advertisements should not be there at all.

Yes, in fact, I do think it is this serious.  How would you like to wake up one morning try to browse to your favorite site (in fact everyone in your house to do that or to go get their email) and have a page come up asking you if you would like to buy some piece of software.

No, I did not get to my site, no, I did not get my email.  Instead I got an advertisement which was on every possible place I would go.

Have it happen to you and see what you think.

Hi KevTech,

Not that simple. I have that version and had that same problem the poster original posted about.

I have version 1.21 without SecureSpot, and the advertising came up. I closed everything and reboot and that solved the problem.

I have just logged into the Router's Settings. SecureSpot is still part of Firmware version 1.21 without SecureSpot and it is checked.

Anyone want to comment on that?

Downgrade to 1.11 then upgrade to 1.21 w/o securespot is all I can think of.

I have to agree here.  I even sent Lycan a nice PM thanking them for at least making the non-advertisement version of the firmware available on the main support page... I had no idea that this "feature" (or whatever DLink's coprorate term for it may be) was being used in NEW routers to "inform customers of exciting new features and services we are offering with our trusted partners"... or whatever the BS term may be.  ::) LOL.

While I agree that marketing on a router is wrong, I don't think this is the intent.

SecureSpot is now a standard feature on some of dlinks routers.  The intent, I believe, is to give you the choice to turn on/off at first boot with the new firmware.  This allows you as a parent to decide, do I need to filter my childrens access to the internet.

The router, by default is blocking all traffic, until that decision is made by the parent.

Is that really that bad of a thing?

I've had three high school exchange students living in my home, trust me, kids go places on the internet you don't want them to.  Even if you turn it off, I think its better for parents to be presented with the tool and allowed to make the decision, instead of missing out on the opportunity to put an extra layer of protection on for their children.

I might have a solution to keep de-link from spamming you with ads for their SecuredCash service.

I'll call it a SearchSensitive Exterior (patent pending).  Just think, electronic billboard style advertisements are displayed on the exterior of your router where those boring LED indicator lights used to be!  The next time you try to do an online search (courtesy of our integrated and *non-removable* SearchSensitive.com home page) you will be greeted with high definition advertisements relative to your search inquiry... all on our unique high contrast, glare resistant 1080p LCD screen that's intergated into the side of the router!  If you would prefer not to receive these amazing offers and other (ir)relevant information from our Trusted Partners, you can simply "opt out" by placing one of our high quality brown paper bags over your router (brown paper bag included, but not guarenteed to work).

 ;)

EDIT: How can I remove this post?  I wanted to pitch my idea to the fine folks at Google before someone else does!

Gee Eddie,
It would be nice if it was plausible to run DD-WRT on these devices.  Unfortunately there is no alternately supported firmware for the DIR-655 so this is just another condecending and extremely lame idea coming from your keyboard.

My idea for these boxes:  Ebay calling...  Going, going, G-O-N-E.   Good riddence...

PEACE OUT!!
