655 Slows down Wan over time
« on: November 03, 2008, 08:13:03 AM »

After about 24 hours, my internet speed goes down from about 4.7 meg to 1.8 meg.  If I plug directly into the cable modem, I get 4.7 constantly.  The only thing that seems to get it back up to speed with the router is to unplug the WAN cable for a few minutes and then plug it back in, but that doesn't always work either.  I have firmware v1.21 and the router is mounted in the vertical position on my desk with plenty of airflow around it.  I have wireless turned off right now, and only have one computer plugged into the router.  Does anyone have any suggestions, or has anyone else experienced this issue?

Hello Japhy,

Interesting problem. I've never experienced this myself. Make sure your wireless network is secure so neighbors can't steal your bandwidth. Also make sure you dont have any p2p programs running in the background as well (The transfer rate usually grows overtime with certain torrent programs for example).

You could also try locking the WAN speed of the router. Log into the configuration page. Click on the "Advanced" tab on top. Then on the left side click "Advanced Network." Near the bottum you will see the "WAN Port Speed" area. Try using 10 or 100mbps instead of Auto.

Best of luck,

Russ

I believe Japhy you mentioned that the Wireless if off so its safe to say theres nobody connecting to you're router. Try locking the WAN port speed, you should also unchecked the automatic up-link speed and set it manually to the highest kbps and unchecked dynamic fragmentation both of these settings are in the QoS section.

Hope it helps good luck      ;D
