HARDWARE problem and no reply from D-LINK
« on: November 09, 2008, 07:31:00 AM »

Hi guys, Im banging my head against the wall here.
The problem is - On teh front/top of the router we have the 2 hardware buttons.  The left one works fine and brings up the information on the display on the router, the right one how ever is not working at all.  Issue has been going on for the last 5 months.  I have updated the firmware, yes powerd of the router for an extended period of time and back on again, still the same problem with the hardware button.
I have been emailing D-Link for the last 5 months and I have not got a single reply back.  Not even a thank you for your money but now you have a problem go **** yourself! >:(

Any advice or help any one can offer at this stage would be greatly appericated.  Going back to place of purchase is not possiable as bought from an online etailer who said as its past the 30 day period its dlinks problem to resolve.  I bought this around end of feeb march this year.

I may not have the solution to your problem as I'm a fellow customer myself.

But I gather from what you are saying that the right button did work for a period of about a month or two after you purchased the unit?

If this is the case, then there are a couple of possibilities I can think of.

On the circuit board under the buttons on the case are two little almost flat, touch switches. The buttons extend a thin plastic piece down to each of these buttons.

The possiblities that come to mind here are this:

 - 1) The plastic connector piece broke under the button
 - 2) The switch became stuck or damaged

The tabs that hold the cover in place for your router are located about 2 centimeters or a ½" from either side on the front. Then on the sides, there are tabs located opposite each other with the back edge of the tabs being even with the back edge of the silver square that is directly behind the display on the cover.

If you do open your router, be sure you have it completely disconnected from everything and that you take precautions against static electricity.

Just check to be sure that both plastic buttons look the same on the under side of the cover.

Then, carefully checking the switch on the circuit board, press it a few times to be sure it's not stuck. Use a good light to check the switch to be sure that it's not loose.

If the switch is loose, then the unit would be considered a factory defect, but in reality, you could fix this yourself if you're good with a soldering iron or if you know someone who is. Just remember, this type of soldering is delicate work.

After checking your unit to verify everything is Ok, close it up as there is nothing else I can do to provide help in this situation.

Thanks for your reply, appericate it.  I was tempted to open it up myself first as im into Modding I was pretty confidant I could get it done.  But did not want to void any warrenty by openning it up myself.  To be honest the way things have gone I dont belive that warrenty counts for anything ;)
Thanks for your advice appericate it once again.
