disappointed
« on: November 18, 2008, 09:21:30 PM »

Just posting to express my extreme disappointment with the 4500 DWA-160 combo and 5ghz.  I spent a ton of money when I could have stuck with my Airlink101 draft N crap that I get the same performance with this stuff at 2.4ghz.

Welcome to the club.  Roughly $500 later and I have worse performance than my 3 year old setup.

I come here to find out ways to improve, and find moderators posting about "5ghz wireless was made for outdoor communication, not indoor".

D-link scores, we lose.

My performance has greatly improved with wifi n on 5ghz ! To bad I had to move the router way closer and my connection still drops at 30 ft. Pathetic range. Come on a wrt54g has better range !

Come on gang! Just try positioning the antennas a little differently. If you position them just right I'll bet you get way better range than a g router. Give it a shot and change the position of the antennas, remember n is a lot more sensitive to the position of the antennas than g folks.

Nope no change. I have tried new adapters, dlink adapters, bigger antennas, less obstruction : range sucks on the 4500 no questions asked. Is it fast ? Hell ya ! Is it good range? NEVER

As far as range how far are we talking like the next house over or 2 rooms. Most of the time if you log into the router Go to Advanced Tab > Advanced Wireless Button on left > and lower the RTS Threshold & Fragmentation Threshold to 2200 it may help.

Basic explanation of what it does:
By lowering the RTS Threshold and Fragmentation Threshold yes it does pull the range in a little but creates a stronger signal within that range. So if you are not too far away from the router you should get a better signal.

I will try the RTS thing when I get home.  I am seeing 26% in the next room ~30ft away.  Switch to 2.4ghz and its close to 100%.
