iPhone/iTouch 2.2 Update Fixes Deauthentication Problem!
« on: November 21, 2008, 03:46:47 AM »

I've had a Hardware A3, Firmware 1.21(no securespot) 655 for about two weeks, and have been having a LOT of problems getting my iPod Touch Gen2 to connect wirelessly. It would frequently take 10 to 15 minutes to connect, and I would find dozens (sometimes hundreds) of deauthentication messages in the 655 log. The iTouch would associate, then deauthenticate, over and over (and over) again.

I have the 655 set to N&G only, manual channel to 3, Automatic Transmission to Best, channel width to Auto 20/40, and Visibility set to Invisible. Security is WPA-Personal, with WPA2 only and Cipher Type AES. I lowered the Beacon Period from 100 to 80 (after reading some messages here). Short GI is checked, and the Extra Wireless Protection is off. MAC address filtering is on, and all my machines (and switches plugged into the LAN side of the 655) have their MAC addresses entered. I live in Times Square (NYC) and literally get three or four dozen WiFi stations in my apartment at all times; I wanted to make it as hard as possible for anyone to get into my LAN through the 655...

When I couldn't get my iTouch to reliably connect, I tried every possible combination of wireless and advanced wireless settings, removing layer upon layer of the 655 security settings, all to no avail. What's more, I was sure it was the 655, as the iTouch didn't seem to have any problem connecting to other WiFi routers.

Well, I was wrong; the 655 was fine. It was the iTouch (& iPhone) firmware that had the problem.

I updated my iTouch to firmware 2.2 last night when it came out, and now the iTouch connects in five seconds, every time. I had a bunch of connection tests I was using while trying to figure out was wrong, and they reliably failed every time before the 2.2 update; they all work fine now. In fact, the 655 connects to my iTouch faster than I've ever seen before. By the way, Apple specifically mentions fixing a problem with authenticated WiFi connections in their release notes...

That's great news!

I had given an iPod touch to my friends daughter, and I found that it couldn't connect to anything else but WEP networks.  WPA was a no-go.  This was on several routers.  4300 (which they have, used to be mine), my 4500, and a DIR-655 also.

Knew the routers were fine, and it was a problem on Apple's end.  The forums were riddled with that.

I just updated my stuff, and seems to be good now.  Thanks for the heads up.
