How to install PNP-X driver in Vista 32-bit
« on: November 22, 2008, 10:10:48 AM »

Hi!

Just got my DNS-323.  I'd like to install the PNP-X driver I found on D-Link's web site, but I have no idea how.  Can anyone explain the procedure?  I tried right-clicking on the .INF file and choosing "Install", but only got an error message saying that this .INF file doesn't support installation in such a way.

Thanks for any information you can provide!

Just goto Network and click on the icon. It should ask you for drivers then just select the path of were you keep the drivers you downloaded and click OK.

Hi, this is a reply to a very old thread, sorry . . .

I use Vista32 and somewhere along the line it defaulted to a driver for the DNS-323 that makes my device show up in Network as though it were just another computer with shared folders, the same as any other computer on my workgroup.

The problem is that I want to update the driver to the PNP-X driver, but because Vista already sees the drive, it won't give me an option to update the driver, at least not anywhere that I can see.

I am trying to update the driver because on another computer where I run Vista64 and the PNP-X driver, I get sustained transfer speeds of around 15MB/s.

On this one that I can't install the PNP-X drivers, I only get speeds of 4MB/s.  I am hoping that the updated drivers will fix the sustained r/w speeds.

How can I install the PNP-X driver on this Vista 32 machine?  Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on this.

I belive PNP-X only aids in the client PC finding the DNS-323 (in cases where the client and DNS arent on the same workgroup ect).  I highly doubt installing the driver will fix your issues.

You may want to look at one the million threads on here about speeds from the DNS, as a wide variety of factors can cause low speeds. Things such as Cabling/network hardware/client PC processing power/Anti-virus software/Viruses on the client PC...  list really goes on.

No.  PNP-X in the case of the 655 only adds the "pretty" DIR-655 icon.  It does not change the options available to you.  The Invoke & Properties actions do the same thing with or without the driver.

Consequently, in my experience, I had BSODs with a ThinkPad T61 & Vista64/Seven64 when the driver was installed and I was on my WLAN.  Your mileage will vary.

Thanks Tank_Killer, in my not very clever troubleshooting I was stuck on driver.  I replaced the network cable and got increases speeds, and while not lightspeed, a definite improvement.  7.5MB/s write and 11 MB/s read which will calm me down for now!

Apologies to the group for not thinking of something so simple.
