Indesign 3 + DNS-323 = SLOW Object Updates
« on: November 25, 2008, 06:37:12 AM »

I have a 14MB Indesign file that updates on high quality object display settings very slow (approx 4-5min at most per page). My original setup was with XP.

Setup
DIR-655, DNS-323, Vista (XP - Original Setup)

I recently moved into a newly renovated home in which I also wired CAT6 cabling. After the move and upgrade from XP I noticed this decrease in performance. I used NASTester to determine what could be the cause (app is posted in this forum) and found the results acceptable (see post below).

Since the NAS Test results are fine I can exclude wiring. The various network settings didn't seem to make much of a difference either as you will notice below. I thought maybe there was a compatibility issue with Vista and Indesign. So, I copied over the links to the local HDD and presto! Everything worked fine. I even found my antivirus slowed down network traffic but not by enough to warrant a 4 minute load time for a 12 MB file.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Just a suggestion...

How long does it take to transfer the 14MB Indesign file from the NAS to the local drive - I'm guessing less than 4~5 minutes - try loading it across the network from a different PC (ie stored on one PC and loaded on a second)

My suspicion is that your application does not load the entire file into memory at one go - but rather loads and parses as it goes - and it will be the stop start transfer that causes the delay.

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two.

Just a few secs to transfer the files. Indesign checks for modifications, then load new (iv avail) proxy image. Even if high quality the object is still a proxy. Since it has to do this I would expect a delay, but I also had this on my previous setup and never experienced an issue. Now one could also assume that CS4 might manage the network files better. Once I get a hold of that app I am sure I will find out.

I don't want to turn this into an Adobe question (thats being handled elsewhere). I am trying to figure out if anyone else seems to be having the same issue and hopefully we can narrow down the options.

One more thing: I am using file permissions for directories and had done so before the backup. I think it could also be possible that since the security was created through XP, Vista wasn't able to modify or look at the files. I had to telnet into DNS-323 and change all the file permissions via cmd line. Further to this, I have read that security checks are a major bottle-neck for files and dir's. I would venture here lies the issue.

Cheers!

Speaking of File Permissions what is the easiest way to return all files and DIR to the default "everyone" or "all"?

TIA
