Losing Connection constantly
« on: November 26, 2008, 10:32:44 AM »

Hello,
I recently purchased and set up a D-Link DIR-655.
I am constantly losing my internet connection.
This happens on desktops connected to the router, and to laptops connected wirelessly.
Any suggestions??
Thanks in advance.

If you're getting indications that your network devices can't stay connected to the router (e.g. "cable disconnected"), then consider whether you have a factory-defective unit.  With no configuration at all, these things work well -- right out of the box.

If you've just purchased this and it fails immediately like that, I'd consider marching it back to the store for an exchange. If the replacement also fails, then it's worth spending the time trying to figure out what it is about your network that is causing problems. Otherwise, you may spend a lot of time trying to configure something that was hardware defective.

That said, one quick thing to do -- use the reset button in the back.

1.  Using a pen tip or similar, press and hold the button down.
2.  Unplug power
3.  Count slowly past 10 seconds
4.  Restore power
5.  Count slowly past 10 seconds
6.  Release the button and wait for about a minute

Try to use the router now -- at factory defaults -- and you should not get disconnections during that trial.  If you do, then consider going back to the store with it.

If your connection to the home network created by the DIR-655 is stable, but your Internet access is simply on-and-off, then reply back explaining what kind of Internet connection that you have and with details about your broadband modem and ISP.  There probably are some configuration items to help you.

Ummm, I'm having the same problem, and I wished I had read reviews on this router before spending all that money on it. Just go to cnet.com and read the reviews from the users on this router, they are terrible! Most of the reviews are how people kept losing connectivity and then a lot of the reviews are how terrible d-link customer service is. I know now there is no use in trying to contact them due to the terrible reviews on them.

I'm not trying to put down their product, but I really wanted it to work. I have to say that the wireless range is so much better than my old Linksys, but at least the Linksys router stayed connected. I had that router for about 8 years, and I will probably hook it back up again.

D-Link actually has good tech support. The agents are quite knowledgable and when a problem exceeds their scope of support they can at least give you good directions on who to contact for support to get your problem resolved.

Sometimes people get mad when they find out that the point of failure is not with the product who's tech support they have contacted but folks really can't expect for D-Link to provide support for other manufacturer's products, including OS problems.

Ok my first question is. Who is your Internet Service Provider?
The reason I ask is because if you are using say AT&T for example and have a Siemens Speedstream 5100 (Just an example). The Speedstream modem comes as a router in itself which causes conflicts with the router due to IP address conflicts. Now you can do 1 of 2 things to resolve this issue.

1. Change the IP Address of the router to a different subnet from the modem. (ie. 172.16.0.1)

2. (RECOMMENDED) Call your ISP and have them put your modem into Bridge Mode. And set up your router for a PPPoE connection. You will need your username and password from your ISP to do this.

Bridge Mode: Puts your modem into a passive state that allows the router to take full control of the internet verification function.

The later of the two will create a more stable connection for you.

P.S. Remember most reviews are written by customers who are unhappy with a product. You rarely see more than a couple of Praise reviews on products because most people, when their product works, they just use it rather than go to a website to tell people how great it is. But when it is bad they want to tell everyone.

Hi chrysalid,

When you set up the D-Link DIR-655 Router, did you also install the Network Magic program that came with it? Did you also enable the Network Lock the first time you installed Network Magic?

Losing the connection constantly, is a direct result of applying the Network Lock, before all computers with Network Magic installed on them, are mapped to the Router and to Network Magic.

Solution: Disable the Network Lock going through Network Magic. Turn on all computers and obtain an Internet Connection on each. Reenable the Network Lock. Also make sure that no computer is being tracked as an intruder.
