permissions lost/reset after reboot - freaking out, please help!
« on: November 28, 2008, 07:28:00 PM »

OK, I've had my DNS-321 for about 4 days now and, up until a few hours ago, loved it.  However, I rebooted the device and now I cannot get to the Volume_1 or Volume_2 shares at all.  I went so far as to reset back to factory defaults, and then reloaded my .cfg file, but still cannot 'see' any files/folders on my NAS... talk about freaking out, this is ALL of my data!  I know it's there because when I go back and add a user then go to network access to add permissions, I can choose the Volume_1 or Volume_2 but no matter.
Even after all that, when I try to connect to the device under my networks listed in Vista, it's asking for a login, password, which I'm entering just as I did when I set up the user again!
I did check other posts in this forum but nothing here seems to help me, please please, can someone suggest anything?
By the way, I have two 500 GB drives set up standard (JBOD).

There is already a very long thread about this problem.  The only way to get it all back is to reset to factory defaults and set up the DNS-321 again from scratch.  Re-booting or loading a saved configuration will remove your permissions.

I mentioned that I tried that in the original thread.  I'm being prompted for a login/password, which isn't working, yet I just set them up (again) on the DNS-323. I assumed my restore of a very recent config file I had just saved would have fixed this.  Believe me, I've read that thread through and through.

The only way it worked correctly for me was to restore to the original factory defaults, and set up the permissions from scratch.  Don't load a saved configuration or re-boot the DNS-321.  It'll mess with the permissions and you'll lose all your work.

Are you trying to set up user permissions? or "ALL" permissions?

I was trying to setup a user permission for both volumes, like I did when I first set it up.

What is very very strange is that I now just set up the same user permission for volume_1 and then saved/exited... NOW I can see volume_1 and all contents. Then I went back in and set up same user for volume_2, exited and I can now see all contents on Volume_2.  This makes NO sense to me but, for the moment, I'm ok, very shaken at the experience.

Another odd thing.  Once I had set this back up, on my second computer, when I tried to explore either volume, I received another prompt to login.  I found out that I had to enter the machine name I'd initially set up the NAS on with the user name and password (ie: machine1/admin + password).
Very odd I think but now both workstations see, access both my volumes.

Anyone else have a similar experience or am I the only on that thinks this resolution is way out there?

I just got my dns-321 about two weeks ago and just set it up last night.  The permissions issue just drove me crazy.  My machine has an account with a password that is 11 char.  Cannot access anything after permissions are set because it erases the ALL r/w permission on volume_1.

I like the permissions model on my maxtor shared II nas better.  I can assign user a folder with username and password.  No matter who you are, if you enter the correct username and password you set up on the maxtor when windows ask for credentials, it just works...

For example, say I'm logged in as "Mad max".  I have a folder on my maxtor NAS called //maxtor/usr/garyh.
If I try to explore or use that folder, it will ask for username/password for garyh.  I set it up on my maxtor as:
username: garyh
password: blah

if I type that in when windows ask for credentials, I'm in! doesn't matter if I'm on as "mad max" or "garyh" (with the 11 char password), it just works!

Well, I fixed my problem and I'm very happy.  I had a P4/2.4ghz box laying around and basically stuck both my new seagate 500GB drives in it, loaded and configured FreeNAS and stuck it in a corner. Solid like a rock so far and once you get over the minor learning curve in setting it up and using the native file system (UFS), it is much more reliable so far (in my case).  With the DNS-321, my outlook file kept getting 'damaged' because two of us access that file from two different computers (not at the same time).  So far, not a single problem and the services on FreeNAS far exceed what I expected.
The only negative in my opinion is that I have to use a larger footprint than the DNS-321 but I can live with that for basically a minimal cost.  Even if I had to snag a p4 from Craigslist, it'd been much cheaper and the reliability can't be beat.

I tried to work it out with D-link, emails, forum questions, direct calling support.  I feel they're not serious enough about this product yet, until it becomes more mainstream.  Based on what I've got now, I wouldn't consider going back.  That, in my opinion, would be a big step down.
If you have little or no computer skills, then a D-Link box (or similar) my be your best option.  But everyone has a geek friend that can be bought, right?
