DWA-552 driver interuptions
« on: November 30, 2008, 05:46:22 AM »

Hi!

The DWA-552 driver is creating interuptions in processing as demonstrated by "DPC Latency Checker" available here: http://www.thesycon.de/eng/free_download.shtml

These interuptions are most noticeable in audio processing where the audio will glitch every 60 seconds for 1 second...

I must disable the driver when recording or listening to music.

Is there any progress on a fix for this or is this a "normal" problem with D-Link network driver ?

Thanks,

Michel

michel,

What driver version are you running? And what level of encryption are you using?

Yeah same here. :(

I'm using WPA2 with AES only. Driver is 7.4.2.75 which appears to be latest. Running WinXP Pro. SP3 x86.

I tested this by first running program for a few minutes and indeed every so often it hiccups for a few seconds. Did this for 10 minutes now and hiccups every time.

Then I disabled DWA-522 via device manager and then ran test again for a few minutes and not a single hiccup. Did this 15 minutes now, and no hiccups.

Using Process Explorer (PE: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx) I see that when it hiccups PE shows DPCs are using more CPU then normal, around 2% CPU usage, instead of 0.77 on average.

So indeed it looks like the program is correct, that the driver is causing the issue. When driver is disabled PE shows that DPCs never go higher than 0.77 CPU usage.

Another tool, but this time directly from Microsoft:

http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/DevTools/tools/RATT.mspx

Log files are stored at %windir%\system32\LogFiles\RATTV3 .

Not really sure what I should be looking for since dlink driver never seems to be listed, even after an hour. Perhaps unknown, which in that case, tool is useless for this purpose it seems.

Hi,

I updated driver (dwa552_drivers_140b09.zip) and firmware (dir655_firmware_121.zip).

The behavior has been there for all previous versions also for the past year...

This is what it looks like in Latency Checker:

Is this being looked into? Really would like to see this fixed.

It's very annoying. Even worse on Vista SP1. Listening to online radio hiccups every few minutes, thankfully for less than a second but pretty darn annoying.

I have the exact same problem (I'm on Windows Vista Home - 32 Bit.) But when I start up my computer with XP (dual boot machine) it works fine. This is a major pain. I may end up trying another adapter soon if I can't figure out how to fix it.

I've read that installing the XP driver (1.11) will fix the problem but I haven't been able to figure out how to use that driver as Vista seems to refuse to use it (it tells me it already has the best driver) - I tried deleting everything and starting over again but somehow it would go back to the old (new) driver again.

At this point I've probably wasted 10 hours with this problem so I'm about to give up. I would buy another wireless adapter if I could KNOW It would work well with Vista 32 bit. Can anyone tell me of such an adapter? USB or PCI - I don't care. I just want it to work without screwing up my audio.

Just as bad with 1.00, 1.11, 1.20, 1.30, 4.10, and 7.4.2.75 from windows update.

Tried with both XP and Vista drivers.

That's all of them I can find. So it seems there has been this issue since day 1. :(

This is crazy and at the point I want my money back. I can't even watch a 3 minute video on youtube without sound hiccups.

If I try and play a game it's even worse. More like every minute the game just freezes for about 2 seconds and then continues.

And I get random lag while using Windows every so often caused by this driver. Does not matter what I'm doing, some times I'm just reading a page and I notice CPU jumps to 100% for a second and then goes back to 0%. If I disable driver this never happens.

So I'm 100% sure that it is the driver and at least three of us are having this problem. :'(

Look what happens if you disable the radio in older drivers:

wtf!!

This [exploitive deleted]. Please fix!!!!

I agree with you war59312. DLink needs to do something about this problem. It's ridiculous. I bought this because I thought it was a high end piece of equipment. I wanted good performance and I paid for it. Instead I got something that doesn't work properly.

Indeed, pretty sad. :(

And to make matters even worse from time to time I have to disable the adapter and re-enable because it says that the wireless key is bad when of course it is not.

Here is what I see in even viewer:

Quote
Helper Class (L2Sec Helper Class) Event:

For complete information about this session see the Wireless Diagnostic Informational Event.

Helper Class: Layer2 Security
 Initialize Status: Success

Result of diagnosis: Problem found

Root cause:
Windows cannot connect to "Will"
The wireless network security key is not correct.

Detailed root cause:
Layer 2 security key exchange using user-supplied key did not generate unicast keys before timeout

Repair option:
View wireless network security settings for "Will"
You can then type the correct wireless network security key.

  802.1X protocol: No
  Key exchange initiated: Yes

   Multicast keys received: No

Event Verbosity:0

I see this error logged 10 times in a row in the event viewer when ever the driver fails:

Quote
TCP/IP failed to establish an outgoing connection because the selected local endpoint was recently used to connect to the same remote endpoint. This error typically occurs when outgoing connections are opened and closed at a high rate, causing all available local ports to be used and forcing TCP/IP to reuse a local port for an outgoing connection. To minimize the risk of data corruption, the TCP/IP standard requires a minimum time period to elapse between successive connections from a given local endpoint to a given remote endpoint.

Router log shows like 100:

Quote
Wireless system with MAC address 00 disconnected for reason: Received Deauthentication.

Update: Has happened now 10 times since I made this post. Pretty lame!

Update 2: I have enabled "Enable Multicast Streams" on /Advanced/Network.shtml to see if it makes any difference.

I have also set:

Quote
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{93A68533-99A7-4723-AE9A-C5AFBE049CF9}]
"DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag"=dword:00000000

DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag was set to 1. Hope this fixes the disconnection problem at least.

Update 3: Nope, no difference. Still disconnecting. :(

When it comes back up now it's an Unidentified network and file sharing does not work. :( But at least I can still browse, check email, etc. Update: Some times it is unidentified network and some times it comes back correctly.

Update: O.K to fix file sharing I just have to disconnect for a second time and re-connect. Oddly takes twice as long as usual.

I just can't believe how darn buggy this adapter is because of the driver.

Even crazier that it got certified (click on image to see Microsoft cert page for this product):

Perhaps if Microsoft looks into this and removes the cert then perhaps dlink will notice?

So please click on the "Report a compatibility issue" link on the page above (click on the image of the product) and report this to Microsoft. Thanks!

Found a newer driver (7.6.0.154, dated 6/30/2008), checking it out now:

http://www.atheros.cz/

It's the AR5008.

Update: Still causes DPC issue. :(

Update 2: Sweet, even newer driver (7.6.1.162, dated 11/4/2008), doubt any improvement though:

http://www.station-drivers.com/page/atheros.htm

Update 3: Nope, still DPC issues. I just hope the disconnect issues are fixed..

No more disconnect issue. :) Not a single disconnect since installing. Finally!

Try to find a registry cleaning utility online that you're comfortable with using, Uninstall the driver and D-Link utility (if you have this installed) clean your registry, re-install the latest driver only and use windows to connect to an SSID and try testing again..

Hi war59312,

Based upon Ru-Fi-Oh recommendation of using a Registry Cleaner, check out TuneUp Utilities 2009 version at
http://www.tune-up.com/products/tuneup-utilities/

They have a Full 30-Day Trial version of the program that you can download and try. It includes a TuneUp Registry Cleaner.

Any changes can be reversed.
