Just hooked up the DIR 655. Connected using the basic setup.  When the basc setup was completed then went to the TABs and clicked Advanced.  This did nothing but bring up the standard could not connect screen.  I then went to the firmware upgrade. The 655 came with HW V3 and F/W 1.11.  I had downloaded F/M v1.21 which I upgraded to.  Once that was all done I tried the Advanced tab again.  Once again nada.  If I can't get into the advance tab I can't do much with the settings.  If anybody has an answer I will be looking for it otherwise I plug in my old tried and true DI 624 and take DIR 655 back to the store.

That's weird. 

Make sure you're using IE with the default security Zone settings in options (or add the DIR-655 to trusted). 

Also clear your browser cache, you may have some corrupted script in there that is keeping it from running.

Any anti-virus suites on that machine? Do you have more then one PC to try it from?

I'm running Norton Anti-virus on the machine I have a problem with and Mast on another older box.  I think what I will do is try again by first clearing my browser cache and then turning off anti virus as well.  I also have Firefox which I can try from.  I may try the advance tab from my older machine as well.  Thanks sll for the tips.  I will let all know what happened.

You can't disable Norton, it's default action is deny. If you continue to see issues then you'll want to temporarily uninstall it.

The problem was with Zone Alarm. I never thought about it interfering with the advanced tab. I found out by shuting off one thing, trying again then going on to the next.  So all I need to do is shut off Zone Alarm when ever I want to access the Advance tab.  This forum is a great resource.  I will be trying other stuff through the advanced tab. If I have other problems I'll be back.  I did notice my second PC (hooked up by cable) could not access the net until I added the MAC address on the list in Advanced tab.  Does this mean when I fire up my laptop I will need to add that MAC address as well?  The thing is my networked laser worked without the MAC address.

Something else has just come up. I decided to add the MAC address's to the area under the Advanced tab. I finished entering and then clicked apply or whatever that buttin is. It starts and the little green bar at the bottom gets about halfway but then it seems to sit there. I waited five minutes but it would not complete. At that point I closed the window.  When I tried to access the net or the router I could not. I had to reset to factory specs and start over.  I tried this twice but it failed both times. Another bit of odd behavior. I am testing the router by plugging in all three computers.  One is my laptop which seems to be connecting ok. I have not even tried it wireless yet.  The laptop runs XP Pro.  Another is an older P3 running Win 2000 pro. The third computer is my main box, a P4 running XP Pro.  On the P3 box I run MS Browser 6.0 and Firefox 3.0.4. On my P4 I use MS Browser 7.0 and firefox 2.0.  My laptop uses MS Browser 7.0.  I use my P4 box most of the time.  Once in a while I go to the P3. Usually when the P3 has been sitting awaile the Firefox will not connect but the MS browser will.  I find this strange because I never had this problem using my DI 624.

Also I have noticed a lag period between when I shut down the router and then start it up again.  Once the power comes on it usually takes a couple minutes before I can connect.

Lastly, in my DI 624 I had an entry under Virtual Servers list. It was "Stealth23 / 192.168.0.250 / TCP23/23

I have looked at the virtual servers area under the Advance tab and I have printed the page from the manuel that covers it but I'm still not sure how to enter it.  There seem to be more entries then the three I entered on the DI 624.  Any suggestions!

   I just figured out how to enter the MAC address's into the Advanced tab area.  Part of the problem is trying to access the Advanced tab from my primary P4 box.  I had to go to the P3 box in order to get to the Advanced tab.  Initaly I thought it was the Zone Alarm that was hanging it up but even with it turned off I can no longer get into the Advanced tab. I cleared my browser cache but still did not work. That is why I now use my P3 box (Win 2000 Pro) to access the router web pages.
   The browsers still come up as a hit or miss thing on the secondary P3 box.  Sometimes they do and sometimes they don't.  I'm not sure what the problem is but it is fraustrating because they worked fine on the DI 624.  I'm beganing to feel these newer routers have a way's to go before they will produce the no non-sense platform of the older G routers. Reminds me of MS 98SE.  It ran great but then the Millium came out and it was a disaster.  I don't think the 655 (and other new routers) are disasters but they are not bug free yet. Another six months may do it. From what I have read F/W V1.11 was fairly stable but this new F/W 1.21 has some problems. More features added, etc. Once the code is ironed out it seems it will be a winer.  Just have to wait and see. Nuf said! Gotta get back to my router problem solving.

It's less likely the router and more likely something on your machines. I would bet bottom dollar that a fresh OS install on anyone of those machines would clear that problem up. Browsers are finicky at best and are subject to all sorts of little fun quirks.

MAC filtering appears to effect all the LAN ports as well as any wireless connections. At least that's what I found with my 655 setup. Once I entered all my LAN connected machines MAC addresses, everything worked as expected. Note that any switches (as opposed to hubs) connected to the wired LAN ports of the 655 will need their MAC addresses added as well. (If your switches don't have their MAC addresses printed on a label on the bottom, you can figure out their MAC addresses by looking at the 655s log, for periodic denied connections. Switches have their own MAC address and send out ARP packets to build their MAC to IP address tables).

No idea why your networked printer worked without entering its MAC; perhaps because it never originates the connection, only responds to ones made to it.

Thanks for the reply.  Actually I have now entered all the MAC address's, three PC's and the router itself.  At this point my only remaining problem is getting my browsers to get online.  On my P4 box they do eventually. Here is what happens. I turn on my PC and also turn on the switch that turns on the modem and router at the same time. I wait a couple of minutes and try to get online.  Does not happen. I have found that I need to unplug the router (power off) for about a minute then power back on.  Once I have waited for about another minute I can usually get onto the net.  From that point on net connection is fairly stable.  What occurs on my secondary P3 box (after I've gone through all the above) is usually retry after retry and then it will (firefox) make a connection. I can let that P3 box sit while I'm working on my P4 box then go back to the P3 and sometimes I have ti go through the retry thing again. Funny thing is when I plug in my laptop (wired) it gets onto the net with out a problem all the time.  Something's going on and I have no idea what it is.  By the way my old DI-624 (super G) did not have any problems at all.
