Vista asks for drivers for Router??
« on: December 01, 2008, 12:53:27 AM »

Hello,

I have the dir-655 router for a week now and have a question. I have searched the forums here but could not find an answer.

If I browse to netwerklocations on vista, it shows my laptop, my pc and the router. When I double click the router, windows vista (home premium) wants to install the router and asks for drivers. I have tried the cd that came in the box, but no result. Also no drivers on the site of d-link.

WHy does windows vista asks for these drivers, are these drivers available and what options are given once the router has been 'installed'?

Thanks for any answers.

BTW I'm running 1.20 EU.

Running Vista Ultimate, Router shows up in the Network locations but I didn't have to do anything special.  This is all done through the UPnP.  If you right click it instead of double clicking it what do you see as options?

THnx for your reply. When I right click I have the option to delete, open website or show details.

In my hardware overview in windows, the router is now listed as other hardware and it has an "!" icon.

Hardware Overview ? - Do You mean the Device Manager?  Mine doesn't show in the device manager, I would delete the entry from Device Manager.

When I right click mine in the Network Listings, I get

View Device Webpage
Disable
Delete (which is grey out and unselectable)
Create Shortcut
Properties

sorry, I have a dutch OS, so need to translate it :)

If I delete it form device manager it will return when I start up vista and click on the router in network...

I have the same options as you, although delete is not grey out.

If everything is working properly I wouldn't worry about it. Sometimes windows will ask for drivers for devices that don't actually have drivers. A good example is and optical drive, CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. I never heard of anyone saying that Vista asks for dirvers for router though, that's new to me.

I tried this at home, I wasn't able to get it to prompt me for a driver install.

Just ignore it...there is no driver needed! And if you need to go on about it: www.microsoft.com  ;)
