More Information please!
« on: December 02, 2008, 01:46:11 PM »

Lycan,

You have stated in a post...
I run 1.21 with absolutely no problem, but I also just leave my system alone and let it run, I use UPnP for everything and keep the port forwards to a minimum. I have several PC's and 3 XboXs and I have NO problem with any of them getting online or gaming. In fact I can have my BT machine downloading things all day and still have all 3 xboxs playing Left4dead at the same time. Granted I have a 25/2 pipe but BT is pretty intensive.
The trick is to find a firmware that works for you and stick with it.
The best thing about the 655 is you can roll back if you don't like the code.
My question is how do you use the UpnP feature? I'm not a tech guy and I have a lot to learn.  I read the manual but still a little fuzzy on how it's entered. Lastly, in my DI 624 I had an entry under Virtual Servers list. It was "Stealth23 - 192.168.0.250 - TCP23/23".  I have looked at the virtual servers area under the Advance tab and I have printed the page from the manuel that covers it but I'm still not sure how to enter it.  There seem to be more entries then the three I entered on the DI 624.  Any suggestions!
Could you suggest a more extensive information site on the Web that would help educate me in these areas. Thanks as always.

uPnP is incorporated into Windows, you can use the feature by marking it in the router... Windows will open the port for you in the router (more or less). But some applications need more than one port. So if that is the case you can configure 'Portforwarding' (a manual kind of uPnP). But when your PC acts a server (and also receives data) of some kind, the router must know to which PC (IP) in the LAN network it need to send the data. That's when you use Virtual Server. Try looking it up on Wikipedia, there's a lot of interesting things to know.

Stealth23: what's this?
OK, the extra fields are Port and protocol I guess?
Port has two annotations, public and private. In normal circumstances these will be the same; so the port that people use on the internet (WAN) side to enter your server (Public port, for example 235.123.123.45:21 for FTP) will be same as the port used by the server/application on your PC (private port, 192.168.0.2:21). If you have configured your server differently on your PC, but access from the outside uses standards ports, these will thus differ.

The protocol/traffic type will tell the router which kind datastream to send through. UDP, TCP, and both UDP and TCP -- can be selected from the drop-down menu. To specify any other protocol, select "Other" from the list, then enter the corresponding protocol number ( as assigned by the IANA) in the Protocol box.
So you need to know which protocol is used by your server. If you don't know, choose both UDP and TCP. But this can theoretically cause a security issue. I would not worry too much about that.

Is this of any use?

On the first read through your info I think I am beganning to understand what your saying.  I may not understand it one hundred percent but it's a beganning.  I will look at my advance tab once again and see if I can put it together. Thanks for your come back.
