Dir-655 on order. Any advice
« on: December 04, 2008, 07:29:31 AM »

After using a Netgear Wnr2000 N router for a month I decided to go with the Dir-655. The Netgear would drop connection anywhere from 3 to 5 times a night. Staples was gracious enough to take back the Wnr200 even though I had it over the allowed 14 days. I have an old Netgear G router Wgr614 which never drops connection. I am using both routers on a new Dell Studio 17. The Wgr614 I used when I had to bring my company laptop home when on call. Since I purchased my first laptop, the Dell Studio 17, I decided to go with an N router which was the Wnr200. I hope the Dir-655 is more reliable.

When you set it up for the first time, set the security as you want it, then give it a different SSID than you've used before.  That way your wireless clients won't try to adjust an existing profile to a new router with different parameters.  Instead, they'll create a new, clean, uncorrupted profile.   Robb

After you configure the router to your liking, back the configuration file up somewhere. It can be useful.

From the Tools - System page, you download your settings and save them.

Hey Lycan,

Can you check out http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r21535222-msg -- seems like a possibly good lead for the inability to restore settings files.  It probably isn't reserved only to the WPA key, it's probably every form field that is hashed (ciphered or encrypted) when creating the settings backup file.

I went to tools on Windows and did not see any system page to check. I went to my router login and did not see any tool area to check. I am new to routers. Exactly where do I go.  Disregard, I still have my Netgear G router hooked up and was looking for tools in there. That has a 'Backup' to click on in a column. I will be installing the Dir655 Monday. I expect it will take 2 or 3 hours given past experience. If this router continues to disconnect, then I will give up on 'N' routers and just stay with my old Netgear 'G' which is solid. Never disconnects.

With all the problems that I am reading about with this router, I'm beggining to think I made a big mistake. Does anyone have one that is working properly.

wait....are you saying, that you DO NOT have the router yet, but are already thinking you have made a big mistake?

Logic would say that most people posting on support forums would need some sort of support.  The few thousand others who have had NO problems with the router would not be posting.  So....

Thanks for the info Ru-Fi-Oh. I will make use of it. The router has been up now for almost 2 hours and it appears to be running ok. Knock on wood.

Although my wireless laptop seems to running at a decent speed. My desktop seems to be running slower then when it was hooked up to my old G router. Any ideas.

Is the desktop also wireless?
