Transfer Speeds?
« on: December 06, 2008, 08:24:10 AM »

I'm transferring a bunch of files to my DNS-321 through my new DGL-4300, but only getting about 9% utilization on my gigabit port on my PC.  These are the only two devices connected to the router at the moment.  What can I do to make these transfers faster?

Thanks!

You can't completely max gigabit speeds.  It won't go at 1 Gigabyte per second, if that's what you were hoping for.  Some of the problems that you may encounter when doing network transfers, is you can ONLY go as fast as your slowest device.  While it may ALL be gigabit connected, you have to deal with I/O bandwidth, and hard drive speeds.  Let's say I have a laptop, and I'm transferring to a desktop.  Both have gigabit NIC's, but the laptop HDD is 5400 rpm's, while the desktop has an array of WD Raptors.  Transferring from the laptop will be very slow, going to the desktop.  It can't max out due to the lack of bandwidth.

Right, but if I connect directly from my network adapter on my PC to the NAS, bypassing the switch, it goes MUCH faster, about 70-80% versus 10% through the router.
