Hi guys. I recently signed up for a very high speed internet plan. 100Mb/s DL, 10Mb/s UL cable. From test I do via a wired connection to my SB6100 modem I'm getting close to 50Mb/s from overseas mirrors so I quite happy about it. I easily get 80Mb/s from local mirrors.

So finally I bought the dir-655 and the DWA-140 N USB.

I connected my main PC to it via wired to upgrade the firmware.

Updated to 1.21, reset settings to default and begun to configure everything.

Disabled QOS/WISH, set to auto 20/40, only in G & N mode, manually set to #11, set to WPA2, AES

Did a few speed test and was very happy to see I was getting everything the same as a direct connection to the modem.

I tried a single thread download from microsoft and got a sufficient 5.5MB/s throughout.

So I pulled out the cable and tried wireless. Here my nightmares begin.

Even though I was connected at 90-100% and in N mode, rate speed would fluctuate from 80mbps to 240mbps in the router status, windows show constant 270mbps.

I tried surfing the net and it was miserably slow. Did the same speed test and was getting the equivalent literally 1/10 wired speeds.

local mirror downloads were just hitting 1MB/s (as opposed to 8Mb/s), overseas downloads from MS were only ~300kbps, webpages were just not loading as fast.

BUT my uploads surprisingly were the same not throttled I was getting up to 2MB/s uploads wired and wirelessly.

So what gives with my download speeds. Why are they so slow!

You purchased the wrong Wireless Adapter. You need the DWA-160.

DWA-160

This works with the DIR-655 Router. The DWA-140 is designed for the DIR-625 Router, while it does work with the DIR-655, the speed isn't going to be as high.

When buying a new Router, also buy an Adapter that was designed for the DIR-655 Router. Don't buy an adapter then buy the Router, especially Wirelessly.

but I why would I need a dual band nic when my router is still only single band (2.4ghz). If it was a network speed issue, then why are my uploads still high.

EDIT: I tested it with a download accelerator and I manage to hit 3.0Mbps wirelessly. Which means it's not a speed issue but the question now is why are single threaded connections (like surfing the net) so slow? pictures takes minutes to load while on a wired connection load instantly.

The servers might limit their connection speed. A lot of servers do that.
Also check out your modem, if you test internally in your LAN and get high speeds, there might be an issue with ISP, modem or modem-router connection.
