RAID 1 with multiple partitions?
« on: December 22, 2008, 10:50:05 AM »

I'm sorry if this has been discussed but I did a search and came up empty. Is it possible on the DNS-321 to split a single RAID 1 volume into multiple partitions? Is this something the configuration gui can take care of or not supported at all? I'm seeing some people posting about their 1.5TB drives only showing 500GB after format and I was wondering if its possible to split a 1.5TB volume into 3x 500GB partitions.

MPA20,

The issue regarding the 1.5TB drives I think is related to a bug with the firmware, not a partitioning option.  When creating a RAID1 setup with the DNS-321, there is only one volume created.

Firmware of the 321 or the drives?

Sorry, I should have been more specific.  The firmware for the DNS-321.  Some users report their 1.5TB drives working, others do not.  I am not sure, but there are different hardware revisions of the DNS-321 which may or may not be contributing to the incompatibilities.  My DNS-321 has hardware revision A2.  I found this on the box near the serial number.  Maybe in the future firmware update this will be addressed.  As mentioned in other threads, its worth while loading the latest firmware and try formatting with different web browsers, Firefox or IE6/IE7 may provide different outcomes.

MPA20,

I understand there is a firmware fix for the DNS-321 to recognize 1.5TB. I have applied that and got the latest Easy Search Utility and it works fine now. I guess I was trying to ask if it is possible either through the D-Link utility or otherwise to partition the single 1.5TB volume into smaller ones, maybe 500GB each. At the time I was thinking about doing this as either a solution for the 1TB limit (before applying firmware fix) or just to have multiple partitions regardless. Sorry if I caused any confusion.

The 1.5 bug is a bug in the javascript and was supposed to be fixed in 1.01. Prior to that you can hack it.

There is no way to partition them.

Thanks. Yeah that's what I figure but I wasn't 100% sure. Would be nice to have.
