DSM-750 & DNS-323
« on: December 29, 2008, 09:21:55 PM »

I was hoping that the new 1.06 Firmware would allow me to stream .mkv files via the UPnP server on the DNS-323, however when browsing my folders on the DNS-323 from the DSM-750 (fw 1.02), while other file formats show up (like .avi), my hi res files do not show up (.mkv files).

Is there an XML file or something somewhere that can be set to tell the DNS-323 that it's allowed to make the .mkv files available for streaming to the DSM-750?

What's the official word on support for this feature?  Do I need to run a package on a standalone PC somewhere on my network to get this functionality? (Like Tversity)

Will the DSM-750 support .mkv files directly or will it require some intermediary application to re-encode and stream?

Thanks for any and all clarification.

Mike

The UPnP AV media server of the DNS-323 doesn't support .mkv currently. You need to find a media server program that support .mkv or play them via USB direct. I forwarded a request to have .mkv support added to the DNS-323 in the next firmware update if possible.

I have DNS-323 serving to2 DSM-750's and xbox360.  I got fed up waiting for a dlink solution.  Tried mediatomb but too problematic and slow...

Now using Twonky server on the NAS.. Works perfectly.. MKV's n all without issue.. I"ve uninstalled tversity and taken back ownership of the laptop that was used as a media server.  Liked it so much bought a license 5 hours after trying the demo.. well worth the $40 and simply avoid the frustrations this issue has caused me.

Total install time: 10 minutes including basic configuration and all was running perfectly.. has yet to crap out on me or not play something I've thrown at it.. Finally this NAS is providing the functionality I actually purchased it for..

Interesting.. I am using TVersity to drive a DSM-510, 520 and 750 on a N wireless that runs them all well. Had to dink with the 750's profiles to get TVersity not to transcribe the .mkv with the 1.02 firmware upgrade.

My goal has always been to play divx and mkv video directly from the NAS. I will look into Twonky..

Thanks.. ce

.mkv and iso are listed as supported in the Beta version for the DNS 323... I'm interested in giving it a run.

Another bug I reported with DNS-323 and DSM-750  is related to the incapacity to play .wma files from the 323 with firmware 1.06. Tech support acknowledged the problem, but no estimated release date was given. Any update on this one, since it does not seems to be addresses in 1.08 beta^

Thanks,

Sorry no update at this time. I have also confirmed this issue I tested it with the DNS-343 and 321 and did not see that same issue. Using the DNS-323 I was able go get a few WMV files to play but not many.
