Fan/disk shutdown
« on: January 01, 2009, 09:30:29 AM »

I have 2 Seagate ST31000340AS 1 TB drives in RAID 1.  I just upgraded to 1.06.  I never noticed before because the fan was always on, but now I don't think my drives are shutting down.  Under power management I have it scheduled to shutdown after 5 minutes of inactivity and hibernate is enabled.  Under system, the config inactivity timer is 10 minutes.  I have UPnP and iTunes servers enabled.  The unit temperature seems to run 105-118 and the fan changes speed, but doesn't ever seem to shut off.  If the drives were shutting down, I'd expect the whole unit to be silent, but that never seems to happen.

Any suggestions?

Same here ... would nice to have had a section in the DNS Web UI to control the Fan speed and/or an option to shut the fan off when HDD's are in Stand-By.

The problem is, I don't think my HDs are even going into standby or hibernate.  They never seem to stop spinning.  Other than the lights on the front and the sound coming out of the DNS, is there any other way to tell if the drives are shut down?

I have the same problem wit the same drives. If you take the front cover off there's 4 blue lights. The top light will be off if the drives are hibernating. If i set my hibernate to > 5 minutes it will never goto sleep. If I set it to 5 minutes it will sleep but wake up shortly after for no reason.

I noticed the seaget 1 TB drive isn't offically supported so, guess we're SOL until someone at dlink wants to look into it.

I posted about my problem here.

Thanks for the info.  Is there any way to request that the Seagate drives be supported in the future?  I've looked through many other posts and it seems like a lot of people use them.

Hmmmmm, at the time I bought my drives and DNS-323 I'm 99% sure the Seagate 1TB drives were on the approved drive list.  I deliberately checked the model numbers and choose NOT to buy the Seagate 1.5TB drives because I wanted a supported drive.  So I went with the latest Seagate 1TB drives and they have seemed to work well although I never really got sleep working right on 1.05 and I've not yet tested it on 1.06.

Am I crazy?  Were these drives never supported?  Or have they been removed from the supported list?

I hope they were not removed after a bug was found.  That wouldn't be fair.  Bugs affecting supported drives need to be resolved as that is the fundamental characteristic of supporting the drive.

I'm using the same model (ST31000340AS) in my DNS-343.  According to the D-Link Support site they are supported on the DNS-323.

http://support.dlink.com/faq/view.asp?prod_id=2399&question=DNS-323

... I personally don't use HDD Standby features - like my HDD's running 24x7x365 for 'instant' access  ;)

That said, have a look on the Seagate site to ensure that there isn't a newer firmware - IMHO, should be no reason why those HDD's can't fall into Standby.

Cheers,

Hilaireg, you're right. They need to update the sticky post on the forum because it's different. I'm not so sure it's a seagate problem. Just that no one else complains about the hibernate problem but us? Anyone at dlink care to test with 1.06 and see if it's working correctly?

I, for one, have no problem with hibernation with 1.06 - I have one Maxtor and one WD drives installed.

Are you running the Vista gadget on your PC and does is still have and issue going into standby with the PC shut down? Do you have any funplugs on the DNS-323? Do you have this issue if you unplug the Ethernet cable from the unit as well? Do you still see this issue if you disable the UPnP AV media server or the iTunes server?

Another thing.. After updating the firmware on the DNS-323 I would recommend resetting the unit to factory defaults in the UI and reconfigure the unit this alone may resolve your issue.

fun_plug of itself should not cause the DNS-323 not to hibernate, however, fun_plug enables other applications to be run which could cause the problem.

I'm running a minimal fun_plug which basically adds telnet functionality and have no problems with hibernation
