Author Topic: Networking from Vista (wireless) to XP-Home (direct connect to DIR-625)  (Read 5287 times)

I recently switched from a Linksys WRT54G to a D-Link DIR-625.  I have a laptop loaded with Vista that is configured to connect to the desktop running XP-Home.  The laptop recognized and connected to the XP system via the Linksys router.

However with the DIR-625 I am unable to connect to the XP computer name (\\computername).  It will connect if I enter the XP's IP address 192.168.0.1xx.  I can't map a drive to an IP address to my knowledge.

Other than manually connecting by entering the IP address are there any other solutions?

By the way, I have no problems connecting from a second wireless laptop with XP Pro using the XP computer name (\\computername).  I'm wondering if this an Vista to XP problem or a router problem?

Your problem seems to be a lot like the problem caused by Norton's Anti-Virus Internet Worm protection.  It blocks the NetBIOS name resolution protocol.  Check your anti-virus system.
