Problems after firmware upgrade 1.21
« on: January 03, 2009, 11:04:09 AM »

I have a D-Link 655 Hardware A3 firmware1.11
I run Win xp pro, The main computer is wired (mine) 3 others wireless all runnung WinXP pro.

When I upgrade the firmware to 1.21 so I can use my printer, The printer worked great and I could connect to the Internet,  But when i tried to play on line games it gives me all kinds of problems,
It would take 2 or 3 minutes to get connected if at all and my wife had problems just playing yahoo games on line, Went back to firmware 1.11 and everything works fine but no printer support, The tech guy from d-link tried to help (port forwarding) and nothing , Any idea's

In Advanced - QOS Engine turn off automatic uplink speed detection.  Set a manual speed appropriate for your ISP subscription.
In Setup - Network, turn off DNS Relay
Reboot all computers and consoles

If this helps, it is a known bug in the 1.21 firmware.

Disabling DNS relay and manually entering DNS servers will solve it, the automatic uplink speed detection will only 'delay' router readiness right after a reboot and won't bother you afterwards (assuming you don't have sudden reboots all the time). So that one is not a factor in your issue.

Nope there's a bug there.

Your suggested fix will also work to ensure that the DIR-655 DHCP issues other DNS servers to the LAN clients, yours requires the O.P. to know what DNS servers to use (which can be found on the Status - Device Info page).

I disabled DNS relay but did not enter any DNS servers manually and the router works fine.

Try disabling DNS relay as that is what worked for me.

Nobody else has confimred this supposed bug. And Automatic detection works fine over here.

Is there any advantages to switching to the new firmware(1.21 from 1.11), other then the usb support ??

I'm glad for you. Meanwhile, the message that I linked is a user who was unable to surf after shutting off DNS relay.  Care to explain it?

I think major ones are the "Guest Zone" which is pretty cool was added post 1.11.  The Secure Spot 30-day-trial stuff is also post 1.11.

Had the same symptom (DNS relay) once, under 1.11 and never with 1.21. There are a lot of other settings in the network and internet gateway device that have an effect on a router, so the conclusion that 'it's a bug' is a bit rigorous. Never have been able to reproduce. So if you want to have a go at it, be my guest.

BTW, if he just enters the IP of his gateway device (modem) there's a 99% chance (considering the ISP's with uncommon connections/modems) that it will all work like a charm. By default these ISP modems have DNS enabled. When he has a bridged gateway then he should just look in his ISP manual to get their DNS IP.

The post you are reffering to still does not 'prove' there's a bug in Automatic uplink speed detection. Would you mind giving some more evidence?

I think I will just return the unit , I should not have to go through all this to get it to function properly
 Thx for the reply's
