UPS alert via USB port for older UPS
« on: January 05, 2009, 12:43:16 AM »

I have an older UPS with a DB9 serial port (it's an APC Back-UPS 650 cira 2003).  Through this port via rs232 cable I can get ups alerts.  Can I hook this up to the dns-323 using a db9 to usb cable? These cables usually come with drivers when used with a pc.

It's theoretically possible - but you won't know for sure until you (or someone else) trys it.

In reality it's a matter of what NUT drivers D-Link included with their implementation - if you take a look at this post, you'll see it mentioned that someone else has tested a beta version with an APC BackUPS 500, but a USB equipped version.

As far as I can tell, the APC units with a USB port essentially use a serial port with some sort of internal USB/serial adapter.

If you try it let me know how it goes - I have an older APC Smart UPS here also with no USB port, if it can work I might consider replacing the batteries and putting it back in service - it's one of the bigger 900XL units with the external batteries packs.

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two.
