Author Topic: Unable to access BBC realplayer audio since router was hooked up  (Read 5840 times)

Hello,

I'm on the phone with Dlink support at the moment trying to work out why I'm no longer able to access BBC radio (live streaming or ondemand previous programmes) since using my new Dlink DIR 615 (HW ver B2, FW ver 2.25). I had the desktop imac hooked up directly to my ISP's modem and was able to play realplayer files (.ra or .rm) with no problem. Then the minute I installed and got the Dlink router up and running.... I could no longer connect to the streaming files or those ondemand for realplayer.

I have a PC laptop that is also showing the same signs so it's nothing to do with the computer or the operating systems, and the router is working absolutely fine for all other applications and internet access (ie I can listen to live radio streams from France). So it just seems to be a firewall or port block specific to the BBC's realplayer audio...

The error message I get from realplayer after many minutes of hanging is:

Invalid socket error: rtsp://rmlive.bbc.co.uk/bbc-rbs/rmlive/ev7/live24/radio4/live/r4_dsat_g2.ra?BBC-UID=2459156c55f6ec51a24ac28601d6b9c262f9bde370405155b690100ed40c15d8&SSO2-UID=

The help support area from Realplayer suggests this:

"Invalid socket error

If you receive this message when trying to use RealPlayer or RealPlayer Plus to play a file over the Internet, it is likely that your network (or Internet Service Provider) is behind a firewall."

I tried playing a local .rm file as Realplayer suggests and it played no problem... so then it suggests this action:

"To resolve this error, set the proxy setting in RealPlayer. You can request this setting from your Interet Service Provider (ISP) or Local Area Network (LAN) administrator. If your ISP or LAN administrator is unfamiliar with the RealPlayer proxy, have them visit the Firewall Administrator's Page for additional information.

To configure RealPlayer for a proxy setting:

RealPlayer G2

Start RealPlayer.
Click the Options menu and choose Preferences.
Click the Proxy tab.
Enter the information provided by your network administrator (or ISP) for either the RealPlayer PNA Proxy, RTSP Proxy, or HTTP Proxy.
Click OK."

I called Shaw Cable, my ISP and they said they do not use proxys or have a firewall... which makes sense since I had no problem with BBC/realplayer files when just hooked up directly to their modem. They suggested I should call dlink and get advice on how to open up the ports to allow these files through...

So... any suggestions? with phone support i've already tried:

First call = 1. Changing MTU from 1500 to 1438, rebooting computer and turning off and on the router, with no success.

Second call = 1. Unchecking the Enable SPI box in Firewall settings within my configuration IP
2. All application level Gateway configs are checked (PPTP, VPN etc)
3. under advanced Network tab I've enabled mulitcast streams

I'm on hold to access a senior tech support help at the moment, but would love any further advice if you can?

thanks,
Nicole

Hi again,

No, it wasn't due to any firewall software on my PC (or on the Mac)... both were working well with realplayer files prior to using the router...

The senior tech support on the phone finally suggested opening up ports manually on my router for realplayer (just what Shaw had said in the 5 minutes I spoke to them on the phone, but it took 1hour 35 mins with Dlink for them to finally suggest this!), so I went to the realplayer site, found the ports they use and then manually entered several of them in the Advanced section of my Dlink configuration site. And voila! suddenly I could hear BBC radio and play other realplayer files.

So just a weird firewall thing happening with my dlink that didn't like allowing realplayer files to be played... odd I think... and very frustrating!

Alas, I'm happy I can now listen to BBC radio again, but it took a lot of patience and an evening on the phone to do it  :(

Is it using a RTSP stream? Also do you own a rev_b?
