slow transmission rates over wireless G
« on: January 07, 2009, 11:17:47 PM »

Hi I'm new here. Anyways, this is my problem. I recently got a DIR-655 for free when i subscribed for my 100mbps internet connection. I understand that this router can go all the way up to wireless N but every computer in my home is using wireless G, therefore I've set it to wireless G only. The problem is, the transmission rates shown on the router configuration page fluctuates a lot between 1 - 24mbps but it very rarely gets to 54mbps. Only one computer constantly remains at 54mbps. I am using WPA2 for my security and have changed my wireless channel many times to try to find a channel where my transmission rates will reach 54mbps but I still can't get it. Anybody else having this problem?

This is not a router issue but most probably a configuration (antena direction, walls, concrete floors etc) issue. Wireless does not like obstacles. Do you have latest drivers and Servicepacks installed?

the thing that really confuses me is that sometimes it works fine and goes at 54mbps on the router wireless status page. most of the times it just moves at 1 - 11mbps

It could be your neighbours DECT phone or a neighbouring wifi signal that's interfering, a door that is open or closed can even have some influence on the wireless signal. If you think that the router is the cause (defective) you should RMA it to Dlink through your reseller and receive a new device.

yeah i think it's probably a neighbor's wifi. i have around 10 different wifi points in my area. all of them are using wireless G. that's probably the problem

Try to find a channel manually that is:
- not used that much around you
- used but by AP's farther away from yours (so with a less strong signal that can interfere)

You can use apps like netstumbler to see all AP's around you with their signal strength (dBi; the lower the - (minus) number is, the stronger the signal)

Macbook indeed does not need Servicepacks  :)

oh well i managed to solve the problem by getting a linksys wrt54gl. the speeds now, when tested on speedtest.net, are at 22000kbps from 6000kbps with my dlink dir655.
