SOLVED: WAN interface cable has been disconnected
« on: January 08, 2009, 07:45:57 PM »

Hi there,
I have searched the web to find the answer to this question and all I have come up with no real cause or solution.

The setup:
Time Warner Cable Internet Dynamic IP
DIR-655 A3 Firmware 1.21
3 hard wired, fully updated, virus free, windows xp pro machines

The Issue:
When only one PC is running or actively being used there is no issue.  However, when there is moderate internet usage on a second pc the internet connection will drop (the WAN light on the router stays on as does the ethernet light on the modem) and give this pair of log entries.
Code: [Select]
[INFO] Thu Jan 08 21:27:37 2009 WAN interface cable has been connected
[INFO] Thu Jan 08 21:27:35 2009 WAN interface cable has been disconnected

This message can be forced by running any internet based game on the first by and then opening playing a movie on netflix.  It will happen every time there is significant internet traffic on multiple pcs.

What I have tried:
Replaced with old netgear router no problems with the connection dropping connection.
Turned off all non essential options in the 655 (i.e. QoS, UPnP, Multicasting, traffic shaping, etc)
Reverted to old firmware versions to test.

Any insight?  Thanks in advance.

EDIT
The Cause?: Incompatibility between DIR-655 and the Motorola SB-4100 cable modem (or perhaps bad modem, but I could not replicate the issue with an old router).

The Solution:  Replace with newer modem.  I would suggest any DOCSIS 2.0 modem, I specifically used the Linksys CM100, but the D-Link DCM-202 seems like a good option as well.

On the Advanced - Advanced Network screen -- look for the "WAN Port Speed" setting -- set this to 100 Mbps.

Then -
Unplug power to the cable modem
Unplug power to the DIR-655
Restore power to the cable modem, wait 60 seconds for the modem to complete its link to the cable network
Restore power to the DIR-655

Now test it.  If this keeps the problem from happening, then the problem was that the unit did not automatically negotiate a good link with your modem.  Creating the manual setting resolved the issue.

I switched it to 100Mbps and as soon as I put internet load on it it crashed with the same error.  I tried switching it down to 10Mbps and it was stable through all my tests, but capped my download speed (as expected).  I then switched it to manual 1000Mbps and it has been stable so far.  I will post again to update in a few days.  Thanks!

Just curious:
- are the ethernet cables CAT 5(E) or less?
- Are the cables and RJ45 plugs DIY or prefab?

The cause for this can also be in your PC's NIC/drivers. What's the make of your NIC's?

Hi ethirty,

You haven't mentioned the Brand and Model Number of the Cable Modem. The D-Link DIR-655 Router comes with an Ethernet Cable. I used that Ethernet Cable when installing that Router, instead of the existing Ethernet Cable running between the Cable Modem and the Router. Have you replaced that Ethernet Cable with the Ethernet Cable packed with the Router?

Thanks for all the responses folks.  So far so good.  With the WAN port set manually to 1000Mbps the internet has been up and stable for 14hrs+  I will update again if there is any further problem.

The cause for this can also be in your PC's NIC/drivers. What's the make of your NIC's?

I am using the ethernet cable supplied with the router for the modem-router connection.  I have tried other cat 5e and cat 6 cables.  I have numerous cables at my disposal both DIY and prefabs.  I have tried a couple different cables and run all of them through the cable tester, and it seems to make no difference.  Additionally, the ethernet light on the modem never goes out, nor does the wan light on the router.

The NICs vary, I have tried both the built in Nvidia Nforce Gbit port as well as a realtek Gbit card.  The connection between the pcs and the router stays stable even when the "WAN cable is disconnected".

The modem is a Motorola Surfboard SB-4200 and I am using the cable packaged with the router, but have tried other cables.

Auto selection of connection indeed causes these errrors a lot (either on the NIC side or the modem side). Think you solved it

Well, the problem persists.  Regardless of what setting I have the WAN port speed set at, it will still give me the WAN cable disconnected error.  Any further ideas?  I have checked the various cables and all test fine, including the one that came with the router.  My next thought is to try a different modem, but it is curious that this modem works fine with one of my old routers.

At the IP address, 192.168.100.1, the SB-4200 probably has some logs.  Can you copy and past the text of the logs here?

There appears to be a problem with connecting with that modem at 100 Mbps. The auto doesn't work cause the 100 doesn't work. It tries 1000, gets denied then moves to 100 and it connects, but then the 100 causes this dropping.

The modem is 1hr off as you can tell by the time.  If this is any help great, if not I can call timewarner and request a new modem.

Good catch!

If you didn't initiate that modem reboot manually, then try swapping the modem.  Even if the LAN side was flaky, it shouldn't have rebooted like that.

Ask for the RCA RCM-425. Best modem Time warner offers.
They wanted to give me the newer Motorola, I hooked it up and immediately had problems.

Just got off the phone with Timewarner and they said the modem seemed fine (right...) and blamed it on the router as I cannot get it to reset on command without the router in place, so I will grab one of the linksys CM100 modems from the office and give it a try.  If it works any reason not to keep the CM100 permanently?

You will have to tell TW that you are switching modems as they give out IP's by the MAC address of the modem.
