Title:
Compatibility issue on DIR-655 supporting Toshiba Tecra 8200 laptop with built-in 802.11b wireless. The laptop is running latest device driver from Toshiba and Windows XP Pro SP3.

Firmware and Hardware version:
My DIR-655 has been upgraded to the latest firmware 1.21. This problem existed when the router had the original firmware 1.11 as well, so this is not an upgrade issue. The DIR-655 hardware version is A2.

Problem Description:
- This router is supposed to be able to support all 802.11N/802.11G/802.11b client devices through a single SSID. But when I configure the wireless router in the above mix mode, my Toshiba Tecra laptop always fail to connect to the router. The Tecra laptop was able to see the SSID, but was just not able to connect.
- This problem is consistent whether I use WEP encryption or no encryption at all, so it seems that encryption is not the issue here. I also tried both with WPS turned on and off to no success.
- The problem went away if I select the router to support 802.11G/b only. But then, I loose the N capability for my other laptop (which is the reason we bought this router in the first place).
- Introducing and enabling the guest zone does not solve the problem either. The Toshiba Tecra laptop was able to see both primary and guest SSIDs, but was not able to connect to neither. Again, as soon as I changed the router primary SSID setting back to 802.11G/b mode, the Toshiba laptop was able to establish connection with the guest zone SSID.

Anyone out there running to similar problem? I have logged this to D-Link customer support. Please let me know if there is any patch or solutions to this issue. THank you in advance.

Ah, an old PIII laptop. Can you identify the wifi chipset? The Toshiba pages don't seem to mention them.
Good chance that the older schipset has compatibilty issues. In those days there were quite some issues with wireless networking using different brands of wireless chipsets...

Not sure if I list the right information below, but I found the followings:

Under Device Manager, Network Adapters:
- Name: Toshiba Wireless LAN Mini PCI Card
- Device type: Network Adapter
- Manufacturer: Toshiba
- Location on: Texas Instruments PCI-1410 Cardbus Controller
- Detail device driver name: c:\windows\system32\drivers\wlluc48.sys
- Device driver provider: Lucent Technologies version 7.43.0.9

Under Device Manager, System Devices:
- I found the "Texas Instruments PCI-1410 Cardbus Controller" is listed under PCMCIA Adapter.
- I also found Intel 82815 Processor to I/O Controller (is this the chipset that you're looking for?)

Note:
- I am not sure if there is anything wrong with the Toshiba Tecra 8200 laptop. As we speak, it is connected to the DIR-655 router in 11Mbps (since I configured the router to G/b mode). Prior to this D-Link DIR-655 router, it was able to connect to two other routers SMC 802.11b, and Linksys 802.11G/b with no problem either.
- Currently, I am just sacrificing the N capability for my other laptop. When I configure the DIR-655 router to the 802.11N, the status on Windows Home Premium Vista (32-bit) on my other laptop is listed at a full 300Mbps.

Sometimes when N is running the B clients will have issues connecting.

Best solution is, also looking at the historic wifi link inside the Toshiba, to get a Dlink 'N' USB NIC. No that expensive and will enbale you to get some decent speed. 'B' is really só 90-ies, even my digital photoframe connects at G nowadays

These Orinoco cards are industry standards, is DLINK testing their stuff..? WTH?

Industry standards from what era? Just kiddin'. 
What date are the drivers of the card? And have you tried B only mode?

These PCI-PCMCIA cards could cause problems in the good old NT 4.0 times because of an IRQ issue. So beware before 'judging' Dlink, that's just guessing.

I have a Palm T|X which has built in b only. I had issues and could only run the DIR-655 in G&B mode. Was very stable too. Turn N on and it was gone. Then suddenly w/1.32b03 ~ I turned WPS off I was able to turn N&G&B on and yippee I have an HP laptop (n) an HP printer (g) and my Palm T|X (b) all working flawlessly. QOS & WISH are on as well

I thought DLINK removed 802.11b to adhere to WiFi Alliance's standards for 802.11n.

The reinstalled it and probably will offer a non-certified firmware version with B enabled.

How do I get this "non-certified firmware version" which may work with my wavelan 802.11b card ?

PS. I am running 1.32NA
