What kind of performance should I be expecting from this device, at the moment I get between 6MB/s and 12MB/s with a single drive, while copying large files (1GB+) to and from my PC. Is there anything I can do get better results?

Yes, I'm running on a Gigabit network, through a DIR-825.

Ok, is it me or is this relatively low? I was expecting a much higher transfer rate. What about RAID 0 or SSDs?

I talked with a Product Rep (Not the flaky Customer Service reps) and they said max performance of their NAS' are 15MB/s. When asked why a 1gbps NAS which should have a theoretical transfer of 125MB/s only has so little, he responded with the CPU can only handle so much speed.

I would argue it has more to do with the controllers involved, but that's just my opinion. It's still pretty week to get more performance out of an USB external drive than an Gigabit NAS.

The best place to put your money to optimize NAS performance is to beef up the RAM on a NAS and each networked client.

I reset the DNS-323 to factory defaults. Gigabit speeds went up to 24MB/s again!! ...

Hi,

For Hi speed transfers like 20-24MB/s in windows (vista x64 in my case) you need to enable the jumbo frames in your dns-323, and in your Windows LAN card. Finally the switch, router or any other device needs to have jumbo frames support.

Before activating juMBo frames i have +- 12mb/s

Thanks, I'll go with the recommendations here to try and reach 25MB/s, but I guess in the end the article that Mig posted was eye-opening, my expectations were unrealistic. Although I like the extra features that the NAS provide I might end up using it as a backup solution only, when what I really wanted was a central file sharing hub.

Trust me. This device rocks hard! I use it as a file / media / backup server with 4 computers on my LAN and find the machine a great asset.

Yes, like I said, I like the added functionality(web services), but as part of a local network I'm still undecided if I should not opt for a USB 2 RAID enclosure hooked to my Media Center PC.

Test with different values and arrive at your own conclusion. Jumbo frame performance is highly variable in different setups. The popular values to try are 4k and 9k.

Small LAN + Jumbo Frames = Nothing substantial

If your Router is DIR-655 then don't bother with anything higher than 4000k it switches after that. There are MANY topics with this already in discussion.

Actually my router is the DIR-825, I'm not even sure it supports Jumbo frames, since I never had to play with it to get decent speed.
