2 Hardwired Computers - 1 keeps losing internet connection
« on: January 12, 2009, 01:37:24 PM »

Hello

I have been using a DI-624 for some time with no problems except for the fact that the wireless portion was making it lose the connection periodically. (I did not care because I was not using a laptop so I disabled wireless). I am now getting a laptop so I bought a 628 followed by a 655 which both have the problem described below.

Network setup was simple as everything was identical to the 624.

With respect to internet access, my main computer (XP Prof.- hardwired) is working without problems. My second computer (Win 2000 Prof. SP4- hard wired) will work for a few web sites and then lose the internet. Then after a while it will work again and then die. The whole time this is happening by main computer has no problem with accessing web sites.

It happens on any and all web sites. Tech support suggested trying Firefox but same thing.

I switched back to my 624 and no problems.

By the way, file transfer between the 2 works without problems.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Thanks

What have you done to exclude the PC's setup and driver settings?
On the router, disable DNS relay and manually enter the ISP DNS or OpenDNS servers.

Thanks for the replies.  I have upgraded to the newest firmware, but haven't done anything about the PC's setup.

If I disable DNS relay where do I enter the ISP's DNS? I have the Primary and Sec. DNS from my ISP.

Sorry I am no networking guru.

Thanks

Open DNS:
208.67.220.220
208.67.222.222

or

4.2.2.2
4.2.2.3

Or search online for one

Disable DNS realy is on this page: http://192.168.0.1/Basic/Network.shtml
The manual entry of DNS on this one: http://192.168.0.1/Basic/WAN.shtml

Remmeber to 'SAVE' each page before going to the next step.

Thanks for the instructions. Unfortunately as soon as I disable DNS relay I get nothing.

Another thought. Is there a way I could leave my setup as is with my hardwired computers running off the 624 and then connect the 655 to the 624 and run my wireless laptap and PS3 off that ?

Is so is there a web site you could direct me to about setting this up. I haven't had much success finding something easy.

Thanks again. You guys are very kind.

Thanks for the instructions. Unfortunately as soon as I disable DNS relay I get nothing.

AFTER DOING THIS YOU NEED TO MANUALLY ENTER DNS, OTHERWISE THERE WILL BE NO DNS INFO AVAILABLE. (reboot afterwards to be sure the settings take on your router and PC's)

I would advise you not to do so, at least not without somebody around to instruct you. When you take the two steps mentioned you should be able tyo fix your issue

Okay I think it is working.  I was manually entering the DNS and saving and rebooting the router. Maybe I wasn't waiting long enough.

Anyway, I tried rebooting the 2 computers after making the changes and it seems great.

One last thing - is there any drawback to using the OpenDNS servers ?

All the help is truly appreciated. It is frustrating that D-Link tech support couldn't take the time to make any of these great suggestions and just kept saying there is "nothing wrong with the router".

Cheers to all

It's not a generic issue and only occurs since firmware 1.21 or so, so they're kinda telling the truth. And let's face it: what would you expect for $100 device... There's bugs in every software. To be honest, being on the forum dealing with user issues quite a while now (have a look at my stats, 19 positive customers and 6 idiots  ;D ), people very often start looking for the error in the wrong location or just leave out essential info. The forum is a much better place to get some help, so you came to the right place.

Using OpenDNS has no side effects or negative impact. It is usually recommended tu use these since ISP DNS servers have a tendency to be slow. And the OpenDNS ones are stable and fast.

EddieZ.

My only point is that if most people can't get the problem resolved by tech support they will return it and by from a different mfg.

Thanks so much and have a great day!

Manufacturers' helpdesks for consumer products are highly overrated, it's not a D-link specific issue.
But there's always the magical forum.

Enjoy your router!
