Need help changing my IP address.
« on: February 05, 2011, 08:59:27 PM »

I am having trouble changing my IP address. I have Comcast, so they wont assign me a new IP if I disconnect -> connect. So I have to change my MAC address, because Comcast uses your MAC address to assign me a new IP. But the problem is, I have no clue how to change my MAC address. I tried the "copy MAC address" button in the Manual Internet Connect Setup and it didn't seem to work. If anyone could help me, I will greatly appreciate it.

P.S. I am only 15 so don't make it too complicated :)

You shouldn't have to change your MAC address to get comcast to issue a new IP address.

If you're using windows. Open a command line window with cmd.  Do a ipconfig /? to display the options for the ipconfig command.

Then do a ipconfig /release  (to release your current ip address lease).

Then do a ipconfig /renew   (to get a new ip address).

I have tried that. I set up a live chat with the Comcast customer support and I think they helped me out. I haven't tried it yet but they asked me to directly connect to my modem instead of going through my router, and do
ipconfig/release  -> ipconfig/renew

I hope it works. I will try it tomorrow and post results.

unplug cable modem and router for 30 min to an hour and try connect again

if this doesn't work unplug for a day.

comcast uses MAC but this should work.. I changed IP several times

just FYI ipv4 address ran out so you might not get new one

btw changing ip has nothing to do with router
