Internet connection problem "each time" at startup
« on: February 11, 2011, 09:04:50 AM »

I had a DI-628 and had no problems, now I have upgraded to the DIR-628 and each time I completely shut down and start back up I cannot connect to the internet, but yet my network is connected. I have put the DI-628 back in and no problems.
I am the wired computer through the modem and router.
The other wireless connections in my house always stay on (laptops) and they do not lose their connection.
I have to release and renew the connection on the router software status page to correct this "each time" I start up.
I have changed multiple settings, upgraded to the latest firmware, reset to default settings and nothing has solved this.
Please help. Thanks.

What OS version are you running on the desktop?
Are the LAN drivers updated?
Are you using static IP options on the LAN Driver on the PC? I recommend setting it to automatic if it is.
I recommend setting a static IP address for each device connected on the router.
Any possible interference from firewall software on the PC?

Can you boot into safe mode (F8) after post (with networking) as a test and can you see any connection issues?

Are the LAN drivers updated? They were not!

I recommend setting a static IP address for each device connected on the router. I am not using a static IP and am a little hesitant to do so, only because I don't know that much about it. I have a playstation 3 and direct tv box using this connection also and don't know how that would affect those
Any possible interference from firewall software on the PC? no

Can you boot into safe mode (F8) after post (with networking) as a test and can you see any connection issues? I was going to try that, but after updating my LAN drivers per your questioning, I have rebooted and was still successfully connected. I am going to test for a day or so and will report back

Good to hear...

As for setting up static IP addressing for your devices, you can have some set for static and some set for auto DCHP. It doesn't affect devices, just how they connect, they either get a IP address always for one device or if set for Auto DHCP, then the IP address may chanbe.

I set up all my devices for Static IP. It helps in troubleshooting and if you happen to setup any of the routers features like QoS or Port Forwarding, Etc, the options call for an IP to be entered in. Should you use an IP for this feature and the IP happens to change for some reason, the feature and option you set up will be come broken and you'll have to edit it to correct it. THus if you use static IP addressing, it will never change. Unless you do a factory reset. Before you do a factory reset for any reason, save off the configuration of the router to file. So if you have configured settings on the router for your use, you don't have the hassle to manually type in everything again. Saves time.
Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the advice. Since updating the LAN drivers everything has been great. Definitely corrected my problems.  :)

:( Same ole problem. When I updated LAN drivers I had also changed my connection type from DHCP to PPPoE, because I have BellSouth.net dsl. Things seemed fine for about a week and then I began to lose speed (testing on Speedeasy.net) and then I had intermittent connection losses. I went back to DHCP and the connection is solid and the speed is back, but once again everytime I start up my wired computer I have to reboot the router to get my internet to connect. I notice at boot up the network is connected, but not the internet. Quite frustrating to have to do this each time. I never had this problem on my DI-628. I even tried to load my gateway.gws file from the old router, but the new one won't accept it. Additionally I have since found out that other wireless computers in our home (laptops) are experiencing the same thing. It is as if we all have to renew/release/repair our IP address at each startup with this new router.

Were you able to figure out this problem?

Did you set up static IP addresses on the router for all of your connected devices and try this?

Let us know.

At this point I have followed the article linked below to a "t" and am having better results, but not flawless.
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/7125
My wired computer has been flawless, but my daughters wireless laptop has had connection drop issues.
I have bellsouth fast access dsl and using the PPPoE connection per the article does not give me a choice between "always on" or "on demand" in my modem settings and I am thinking the on demand is default with PPPoE and may be some of my problem.
Regarding static IP, I am not familiar with how to do it nor what address to know to use. I also am unsure of the ill affects towards the wireless devices such as laptops, ps3, direct tv, etc. on my network. Do those devices require a settings change? What are the benefits? Any performance differences?
Let me know what you think. Thanks.

I'ts possible that your DSL ISP modem could be causing some interuptions for the Internet. I would ask your ISP to see if they can check the modem logs on there side to see if there have been any such entries or odd behavior between them and the modem. PPPoE is what is mostly used by DSL providers. The modems are fairly standard however some do not have options for ALWAYS ON. I would look at buying your own DSL modem. ISP modems should work well, however other non ISP modems have more features sometimes. I have two buddies that use a DLink DSL modem. Also make sure your DSL line is wired correctly and filtered correctly.
Can review my buddies issue here if you like:
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=9438.msg66864#msg66864

As for setting static reserved IP addresses on the router, it's fairly easy. Talk a look at this sticky:
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=16330.0

The beginning gives some information on how to set up reserved IP addresses on a DLink router. The web page might look different to some degree, however the process to set this up is the same. There are no ill effect for setting up static IP addresses on the router for devices. The benefits for doing this are ease for troubleshooting, devices get the same IP address that wont change unless you change it for some reason. Ease of management of multiple devices. Should you use the extra features of the router such as QoS or something that you set up a rule for, this rule could break if left on Dynamic IP addressing. If set to static, the rule will never break.

I have about 20 devices on my router and everything is set for static on the router. I know what the device is and it's ip address is.

Just an update in case anyone could benefit from what I finally got to work well. After following the instructions in post #9, I was able to configure my Westell modem with my DIR-628 optimally, but still had intermittent drop connection issues. I have resolved all of my problems now by changing my internet connection setting on the router to "always on", instead of "on demand".  Also broadbandreports has a tweaktester, which I have also done some bandwidth tweaking with. Things have been good now.  :)
