I just upgraded from my Linksys WRT310N to a DIR-655 B1 to get rid of this problem, and it's still here.

I'm running 2 wired computers off the router. When 1 is online, the connection is great, no lag, no high pings, etc. When my wife jumps on hers at the same time, especially while gaming together, after about 20 minutes we get connection disconnects for about 30 seconds, or massive high pings (999), and then the connection restores itself. After about 10 minutes, this happens over and over again about every 10 minutes.

I'm not a router guru by any means..

I have port forwarded the port used by one game, but no difference. I've set the uplink speed to 1024 Kb on the recommendation of another person, so difference either. Other then upgrading the firmware..I have NOT touched a thing..

There has to be something I'm missing because there are plenty of people that say this router kicks alot of a$$..so why not mine ?

Specs:
Router - DIR-655 B1 hw:2.01n (latest firmware)
Both computers - Win 7 x64 Ultimate
Modem - Shaw cable Motorola SB5012 Cable modem

What ISP serive do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Is he a stand alone modem or does it have a built in router?

Have you setup Static IP reservations for the PCs?
Do you have Advanced DNS serviced enabled? I would disable this to test.

Make sure your Primary and 2ndary DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual that can be found in Status/Device Info/Wan section.

Might try setting your firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for both TCP and UDP.

Have you setup Static IP reservations for the PCs? Not with the new one.I read that I can only have one static IP per modem..this not true ? Easy enough to change this though I was not given a specific IP from my ISP, we are running dynamic IP's.

Do you have Advanced DNS serviced enabled? Can't find this option yet..

Make sure your Primary and 2ndary DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual that can be found in Status/Device Info/Wan section. Yes, IP's shows for everything connected, and I have a primary and secondary DNS server showing

The modem is a Motorola SB5102 Cable Modem Then your good to got then. Some modems have a internal router built in. Causes some connection issues by adding a additional router.

Have you setup Static IP reservations for the PCs? Not with the new one.I read that I can only have one static IP per modem..this not true ? Easy enough to change this though I was not given a specific IP from my ISP, we are running dynamic IP's. I meant static IP addresses on the LAN side. No the WAN side. Try setting up static IP addresses for your devices that you are connecting to the routers LAN ports.

Do you have Advanced DNS serviced enabled? Can't find this option yet.. Some routers don't have this option, just checking.

Make sure your Primary and 2ndary DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual that can be found in Status/Device Info/Wan section. Yes, IP's shows for everything connected, and I have a primary and secondary DNS server showing Should be good to go here then.

I read that I can only have one static IP per modem..this not true ?

Modem has one IP per modem MAC.

But you can reserve all devices IP that the router is giving them which will make sure you are not competing for the same IP.

Open the web interface then go to Setting > Network Setting

Scroll down to the bottom of the page and reserve IP for all devices that connect to the router. May also help to limit how many IP are available to how many devices you have.

Add DHCP Reservation section located right before the reserve IP section you can limit the IP range.

I gave both computers static IP's using the control panel. When I opened the router up again, both computers disappeared from the "who's connected via LAN on the router" area. I gave them both dynamic again, and they showed up back in the router. But I noticed that when I checked the IP via ipconfig/all, it said "preferred" beside the IPv4 IP address (same as when set to static IP). And when I restarted the computer..the IP stays the same (as in the router doesn't change the IP addresses).
Does the DIR-655 give your computer a static IP from within the router? Both computers are diffferent static IP's..

Anyway..still have the problem..works great with both computers doing general surfing..but once in game..very bad pings and huge lag spikes every 10 minutes or so, sometimes sooner..Weird..

Could it be my uplink speed is set wrong ? I've set it to 1009 kbs as the router said that was the measured uplink speed (What is it exactly??) . Perhaps my ISP's upload is not fast enough for two computers gaming at once ?

Where did you make the IP static?

You want to do it in the router and leave Windows networking set to DHCP...if both computers are already connected to the router just pick them from the drop down list and reserve them.

As for uplink speed you have to know what speed your ISP gives you if you want to set it manually.

Try a speed test

I just leave it on auto.

I went thru the control panel, network properties, IPv4 properties..something like that. Anyway, I went back and set it back to dynamic anyway.

Happening again tonight, but only 4 times..mst have done something right so far..
