Streaming videos from DNS-321.
« on: February 14, 2011, 11:40:19 AM »

Hello all.  I have a DNS-321 with a number of DVD rips in .ISO format stored on it.  I also have a Western Digital WD TV Live Plus media player.  The player will play the .ISO files from an attached USB drive and from a shared folder on my PC.  When  trying to play a .ISO file from the NAS, however, it indicates an unsupported file type.  The WD site states "In order to play the ISO files, you will need to search for them through the Samba Server."  As far as I can tell, the DNS-321 does run Samba Server.  It has "UPnP AV Server" enabled and Network Access Settings: Type SMB enabled.

Can anyone tell me how to get the WD player to play .ISO files from the NAS?

Thanks,
Jack

I have the exact setup you do.  Everything works normally with my WDHD TV Live Plus, ISOs, vobs, etc.  The only thing I don't do is "UPnP AV Server".

Thanks,  dllmgch.  I disabled the UPnP server, and accessed the NAS as a Network Share.  Gives error "There is no media in the current folder."  I don't find any way to specify a folder on the WD player.  I tried changing the login name (login to NAS from WD) to include the NAS volume\folder path name.  Also tried specifying a default folder for my user name in the NAS setup.  Still no luck.

Am I missing something in setup on the WD or on the NAS?  I know just enough about network configuration to login to a network resource, map a drive, etc.

Thanks,
Jack

At my work, we have a tech that uses the expression “Let’s drop our pants and leave everything wide open” when he is trying to troubleshoot network/security issues.  Basically, he turns off all security settings while troubleshooting the problems and gradually adds the layers of security back after he got the system rolling.

In your case, I am going to make the following assumptions:

1.   You can watch the same ISO file sitting on a local device such as a flash drive(you said that you could)

2.   You are able to watch the same ISO from another network shared folder such as Windows share?  If you are a MAC user, I have no idea how to setup a share folder but I know it can be done.  Here’s a link to show you how to set up a Windows XP share - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304040  I am sure you can search online to show you how to share other OS.

3.   You are able to play other media files using “UPnP AV Server”.  ( you said that on your first post).  This tells me are you connected on the network.  Incidentally, you cannot stream ISOs using UPnP AV is because ISO is not a media file type.  Furthermore, as far as I know, you can only stream a very limited file types using UPnPAV.  You can check the forum regarding streaming video using UPnPAV.  Your WD Live TV plus is capable with a lot more.   So, utilize the WD player to play the media files.  Use the NAS as a file server.  You can turn on UPnPAV later if you want to stream music etc.  I just wouldn’t do it for video files.

4.   You have the latest firmware for both devices (WD Live TV and DNS-321)

If you are able to do all that above, I have a feeling your problem is in the network access settings.
I can tell you when I got mine DNS-321, I popped the 2 hard drives in, connected to the network.  During configuration, I left network access at default or in another words, I gave all users read/write access to the entire volume_1 of my NAS.  I copied some test files into the NSA.  I turned on my WD Live TV plus, I go to Videos - Network Shares – My NAS the player found my NAS, I opened the folders in there, I see all my files and I was able to play them.

Back to you, here’s what I would do.  Go to Network Access, under your SMB access list and delete everything in there,   Next under Network Access Settings, Type = SMB, Category = user, User (CHECK THE BOX ALL ACCOUNT), check on Browse and click on the “root” of your volume_1 (whatever you called your NAS volume during setup), READ AND WRITE permission, now click Save settings.

Logout.

Go to your WD Live TV plus, go to Settings – Network – Clear Login Info for Network Share.
Now go back Video – Network Shares – your Dlink DNS321 – it may take a few seconds, you should see your root folder.  Once you see that, browse to the folder with the ISO file and play that bad boy.

Once you are able to play the ISO file, it is time to put the pants back on by adding security back to your NAS box.  Good Luck.

Thanks for the suggestions,  dllmgch.  I may not have the chance to try these ideas until Thursday, but I'll let you know how it goes.

Yay, success at last!

I ran through your suggestion to delete all existing access settings and give full access to all users; still no luck.  After messing around with that for a while, I did a "Reset Network Access List" and started over.  With that, the WD finally saw the folders and files on the NAS.  (Not sure what Reset does that manually deleting the SMB access list does.)  Then I created a user account for the WD player and gave it R/W access to the folder that contains all my video files; this worked as well.  I then recreated the user access for myself and my family to restore all previous access; everything still worked.

Thanks for your help, dllmgch, you pointed me in the right direction.  I appreciate your taking the time to post all that info.

Yep. I've had to reset my dns after making changes to you before it took effect. Now I do it automatically anytime I make a change. Dns-323 has this issue too

Yesterday my WD Live HD could no longer (!) read the iso files on my DNS-321.  After diddling around for a while, to no effect, I unplugged the WD Live HD power and let it reboot.  Now I can stream iso files from the DNS-321 again.  It was WD, not D-Link, that was the problem.

Well, we can dump the above.  It only worked for a few hours.  I still think it is the WD Live HD though, because while, again, I cannot stream iso files, I can stream mpegs with no problem at all.   :-\
