I was wondering if there's a way to change the permissions of specific files?  I copied some files over when I was logged in on one machine, now I'm trying to download these files over FTP, but only the OWNER has Read, write, execute permissions on these files.

is there a way I can chmod them?  This is quite frustrating!

Thanks for the reply, however I don't think I worded my question properly.  I was asking about changing file permissions using the NAS administration utility.  Right now the only options are RW or just read access.  When I uploaded a file the permission for accessing the file was for the file owner only, and even though I logged in under the same username/password to download the file - I get a denial due to permissions.

I'm hoping 1.7 comes out with a slightly more robust FTP daemon so we can CHMOD the files within the NAS...

you will have to telnet into the unit. Install Fonz...get a telnet app...login and manually change the permissions. I have a thread that I was helping out with here for the exact same issue. I can't post external links since these are not DLINK supported apps. I'll serch for the article I was referring to aboe. Yo ucan also search the topic easily on GOOGLE.

I had a similar experience after a "tech" at DLink had me reset some settings so I could remain connected to the 323 after reboots.  Well, it turns out that when I went back to a secure way of using the 323 (after I realized that the tech's changes opened up the 323 to ANYONE on the network) all of the files I accessed/changed before were completely inaccessible.  I tried everything but could not regain permission to do anything with the affected files.  I had to install a hacked version of the firmware, telnet in, and get a UNIX-geek friend of mine help me fix the permissions from a command prompt.  That was a lot of fun.

Oops, I see another post just addressed this as well.  I'll just add that you don't need to do the fonz thing, you can just download and install the hacked firmware that is identical to 1.05 but has telnet enabled.  I found that to be much easier than installing the fonz funplug.

This post was in regards to something else but the answer still applies.
1) Fonz Funplug v0.5 AND (I am not allowed to add external links to unsupported files - SORRY)

Fonzplug is not supported here and is still in beta, however, it is a great app and I haven't had any issues with it yet. Anyway, don't expect any help from the mods (understandably) with this since it is not developed by Dlink.

quick and easy way to install chroot debain w/ssh enabled.  From the command line you should be able to create groups, users.  Not sure if it will effect the precreated dns-323 groups =/.  Let me know if it works for you.
