No internet connection on PC, but fine on wireless laptops
« on: February 16, 2011, 10:05:28 PM »

I had to reboot my Dir 655 because my 2 wireless laptops wouldn't connect to the internet.  Once I reset all of my static IP settings in the dlink admin tool the wireless laptops work fine.  The problem now is that I can't connect to the internet on the computer that is hard wired into the router.

I recall once before having to adjust the TCP/IP settings in the Network settings,  but don't remember exactly what it was the I had to do.

Any thoughts or help would  be appreciated.

Thanks

If you reset the router, your previous settings are gone. I would set up static IP address reservations in Setup/Network settings for all of your devices. Ensure DNS Relay is enabled. Set the devices for automatic in their
LAN properties.

Does this router have Advanced DNS services? Turn it off if it does. Make sure Primary and 2ndary DNS addresses are filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual from the Status/Device Info/Wan section.

Let us know how it goes.

Did you make sure the network settings on the PC are set for automatic? Are there any previous settings taht are enabled here?

Are you getting any indication that the network is connected and online? If you go into Network Connections, it should display a status of the connection, connected or disconnected.

What OS is loaded on this PC?

Try a different LAN cable from the PC to the router? Try a different LAN port on the back of the router to be sure.

yes, it shows that it has been connected for 47 minutes.  i have rebooted a couple times after making alterations hoping that would do it.

Ok look at the Status/Support tab in XP/Network settings...This will display IP address information. Is it getting anything here? You should see IP address, Subnet and Gateway here.

Well that looks good.

Could try the REPAIR button and see if that clears this up. Been known that the DNS in XP can get clogged up and needs to be cleared out. Might help.

Ensure DNS Relay is enabled on the router, Setup/Network settings.

Just to be sure the PC is working, what happens if you connect the PC directly to the ISP MODEM to test?

I tried the repair button several times with no luck.

I now believe it is something with my computer's network card or something else on the PC itself.  I connected my laptop up to the router with the cable that was plugged into the PC and turned off the wireless on the laptop.  It worked fine on my laptop.

I appreciate your help and sorry for wasting your time if this is the issue.

Try a different NIC then. Sounds like you are doing in the right direction.

Don't feel like you have to apologize man, what these forums are for.

Ensure DNS Relay is enabled on the router, Setup/Network settings.

That can potentially cause other issues. In standard home situations "DNS Relay = off" is preferred....
