router stops working after several hours
« on: February 19, 2011, 08:25:12 AM »

Hi All,

My D-Link DIR-655 will no longer let me pull up any web pages after several hours.  For example, it works great when first rebooted, but the next morning web pages have timed out.

When it is broken, I'm unable to connect to web pages via another wireless access point that i've plugged into the D-Link.  I'm unable to use any of the wireless PCs or devices in my house.

After it's rebooted, it works well for at least a few hours.  It has the latest firmware and has basic, out of the box settings.

Any ideas?

Thanks for the reply.

Yes - when I connect directly to my Qwest Q100 router I can access the internets again.  I've had very stable internet access with the Q100 and my Linksys WRT54G v8.0 for a couple years.   I've had the D-Link for a couple years as well but I have problems whenever I try to use it.  Now that I need N speed, I either need to get the D-Link to work or buy a new one.

Your 655 or the Qwest do not stay talking to one another.  Maybe your connection is timing out after a period of inactivity?  Does the Qwest box have any keep alive settings you can tweak?  Have you considered upgrading the firmware on your older 655?  Have you tried cloning the MAC address from your PC to the 655?  Hope one these suggestions helps or points you in the right direction.

Thanks again for the responses.

I will investigate the possible time-out, keep-alive settings, and cloning the MAC address.  I've never had this issue with any other wireless routers so I assumed there wasn't a time-out issue.  The 655 has the latest firmware and still exhibits the issue.  If I find anything out, I'll post it.

The router failed again tonight while we were actively using the internets.  Suddenly the internets were very, very slow and pages would load in a couple minutes or not at all - quite a change from 40MB down and 20MB up we are used to.  First, I pinged the router, the ISP router, and a web site - everything worked - DNS, TCP/IP traffic.  Next, I plugged in an Ethernet cable directly to the 655 and it didn't help.  I ran several tests and the internets worked, albeit intermittently and very slow.  I grabbed the 655 logs and statistics from during these tests and posted them below.  There is a lot of Dropped packet from the IP of one of my clients to an internet IP.  Also, there are a lot of DNS relay ALG rejected packet.  Not sure what any of that means yet.  I couldn't find any keep-alive settings on the Qwest Q100 but I took this chance to clone my PC's MAC address in the 655 and increase the DCHP lease on the Q100 from one day to 365 days.  I'm curious to see how the next 24 hours go...

Is this qwest Q100 dsl? Is this modem a stand alone modem or does it have a built in router?
It's recommended that you bridge the ISP modem if it has a built in router so that you can use the 655 for the main router and it's features.

Yes, this is Qwest DSL - http://www.qwest.com/internethelp/modem-q100.html.  I'm assuming it has a built-in router, but I'm not sure.

The log entry ALG rejected packet was critical.  I have disabled Application Level Gateway (ALG) Configuration options under Firewall.  http://www.bing.com/search?q=ALG+rejected+packet&form=QBRE&qs=n&sk=

So far, this has worked.

Any feedback or suggestions are still welcome and I'll look into bridging the ISP router.

That modem is also a router and uses the same IP as the 655.

http://192.168.0.1/

You need to change the 655 or modem to a different address to avoid IP conflict or bridge the modem.

Thanks for the tip on the IP address.  I had already changed the Q100 to 192.168.3.1 but I'm researching how to bridge the device now.

After more than a solid day of uptime, the 655 showed a consistent download speed of about 24Mb/sec on speedtest.qwest.net.  I rebooted the router and it immediately went back up to just under the 40Mb/sec max speed of the WAN connection.  So, there is still some slow degradation of the router's performance.  I'll be poking around to see if I can reduce or eliminate that.

In order to maximize stability and performance, I am trying to set the Q100 in transparent bridging mode.  http://www.qwest.com/internethelp/modem-q100.html.  I set the Q100 to bridging and then set my 655 to PPoE and entered my credentials.  I couldn't access the internets but I have a feeling I was very close.

The next step is to find resources and tips on how to set up the 655 to work in this bridged environment.

Thanks,

You are close. I would make sure the DSL modem is fully bridged. I would call the ISP and have them help you and verify this with you on the phone. Most ISPs will help you make sure the PPPoE information is correct in the router as well. If the credentials are entered in correctly. Save the setting and then power off the router and modem. Power on the Modem first and let it sync. Some modems Internet light will not display, meaning this is in bridged mode or it's lost connectivity with the ISP. Power on the router and let it sync. Log into the router and go to Status/Device Info. You might have to refresh the page a couple of times, however if the modem is bridged correctly and the credential are in the router correctly, you should see WAN IP addressing and DNS information in the WAN section. If you do, Copy down the Primary and 2ndary DNS IP addresses and go to the Setup/Internet/Manual section and put these addresses in here if they are not auto filled in already. Sometimes this doesn't get filled in automatically.

Thanks again.

It works.  The key was that my username is supposed to be "pruetjob" in the 655 instead of "pruetjob@qwest.net" as was shown in the Q100.  Other than that, I just set the 655 to PPPoE, entered the username and password, and it works.  Both routers are out of box settings except the bridging on the Q100 and then Application Level Gateway (ALG) Configuration features disabled and PPPoE enabled on the 655.  No manual settings or anything.

I can't wait to see how the connection holds up 24hrs from now.

You may want to edit that post before a webbot gets hold of your email address and username.

Good to hear you got it connected. I agree with Dave, edit your post and use a fake or random characters for your PPPoE log in info here. Hope it works well for you. Keep us posted.
