DCHP lease time - Firmware Update?
« on: February 25, 2011, 12:29:03 PM »

Sorry for the n00b question. I've searched and can't find an answer...

I have an EU A3 running 1.32NA, now most of the time it runs pretty good. But with one device (AC RYAN PlayonHD media player) I am struggling with the router giving up the DCHP IP lease when the player is turned off.

Troubleshooting this it seems that the only way to get the IP to revoke is either to drop the lease time down real low or to manually revoke through web control or reboot the router.

I do have the router passing data through two switches before it reaches the box, which might not be ideal, but it works fine for the other devices on that switch (NAS, Satellite box, Slingbox, laptop).

Might a firmware update help?

Is there any long term risk of dropping the lease time down to a couple of minutes? Is the router having to work harder?

Thanks!

Is there a reason for having the IP address for the media player?

Yep, it needs to access content on the network (NAS shares).

It should also be able to pull in internet radio, but less interested in this. Main concern is reliably reaching data stored on NAS and/or PC Shares.

Tried this, didn't work either. Haven't really looked into that in more detail, but suspect the same problem of the router thinking that the device is still connected when it is not (turned off). When the POHD is then turned back on there is some kind of problem as the IP address is already in use.

I think!

Are you getting this IP address in use on the media player?

Unfortunately not, I wish it did, it would have saved me a lot of time. Unfortunately no warning, it's a bit of a black box. Setting a manual IP gives not indication whether it is connected or not (have to check on the DIR 655 web interface), so sometimes it would look connected but I couldn't access NAS shares.

On DCHP it just says DCHP not ready. When this happens the only way to get it to connect is to revoke or reboot - or wait for the lease time to expire...

Are the other devices using DHCP or are they static assigned on the router?

7 devices set as reserved DCHP. I don't reserve an IP for my mobiles or laptop, so I generally have a mix of reserved and non-reserved DCHP.

Tried setting the POHD as reserved, same problem.

Appreciate the help BTW.

So have you tried dropping the lease time down?

Just checking ideas before doing FW upgrade. This FW thats currently loaded come with the router?

Do have any rules or options set up on the router for these items?

Lease time is at 1 min at the moment. So when box is powered off the lease expires, and when powered on again it gets a DCHP address. So the box has to be off for the duration of the lease before the router revokes the IP. Restarting the box before the lease has expired results in 'DCHP not ready' message and no connectivity.

Everything else is working fine at the moment, but most of those reserved DCHP addresses are set to expire 'never' .

Kinda looks like either the router isn't recognizing that the connection is lost or disconnected or the box isn't sending a disconnection to the router saying, Hay, I'm going off line. I know that the router will keep the least depending on the time set up for lease. If the router is ending the least at 1 minute then I presume the router is doing it right. I presume that any other devices are not doing the same thing? I might venture to say that the box might have an issue of other devices are behaving correctly after power down and power on.

I think you have probably got the answer here, I think I might go back to the manufacturer.

Do you know where I can get more information about what disconnect signal should be being sent?

In the meantime I'll get on google.

Don't know what signal might be sent. Just seems like if the router still is giving the same IP address to the same device after power off then on, the device should recognize that its the same IP address and use it from the last time it was connected.

That would be my logic too. Just not working for this unit, but works fine for all my others.

I will get on to AC Ryan.

Thanks for your help!
