DNS-320 backup to ftp
« on: March 02, 2011, 03:02:21 AM »

Hi, is there a way to backup my DNS-320 to a remote ftp? I noticed that in the latest firmware update there is a "Remote Backups" option, but it is only possible to backup to another NAS. I don't have access to a remote NAS but I do have access a remote ftp which I would like to store my backups on. The reason for this is that the computer and my DNS-320 is in the same apartment and in case of theft or fire all my stuff would be gone.

I also noticed that you're able to schedule downloads from an ftp, but not uploads. It would be a neat feature to have since I could then make a backup of my DNS-320 and schedule an ftp upload to my remote ftp server.

However, I think that an option to do incremental backups to an ftp would be preferable since then you would not have to do massive file transfers every time you you do a backup.

Hello.

I need this feature too for the same reasons.

I expect that an update with this feature will be released soon.

Regards.

You could investigate using rsync for your backups which is what I use here to backup between our server and the two NAS.

If you have a PC on you can run an FXP client and it would accomplish the same thing. The DNS-320 does not have an ftp client built in to allow it to connect to an FTP and upload by itself.

Thanks for your answers.

Actually, I use CobianBackup on a computer that is permanently ON to securely and regularly (differential backup every night, complete backup every week-end) save the content of my DNS-320 to my remote FTP server. That's a good working solution but the computer need to be always ON and that not his initial purpose.

I would have preferred that the DNS-320 take care of the remote backup because in my opinion it is one of the purpose of a network hard drive with ftp server.

I agree that there is solution to do the work but it would be better if the DNS-320 had a backup manager with FTP client feature (with secure protocol support of course).

So I need this feature even if I can do the work using a computer (consuming power every night and week-end just to do this work) :)
