WiFi Connections dropped periodically. Wired OK.
« on: March 05, 2011, 09:35:41 AM »

My DIR-655 drops WiFi connections every few days.  All wired connections are fine.  Rebooting the router fixes the problem at that time.  Cable modem works perfectly fine.  Here is my setup:

Time Warner Cable modem - Motorola SB5101
D-Link Router DIR-655
Alienware Desktop - direct ethernet connect to router
Oppo BD-DVD Player - direct ethernet connect to router
Xbox360 - direct ethernet connect to router
Laptop - wireless connect to router
iPad, iPod Touch, Android phone - wireless connect to router
XBox360(2) - wireless connect to router
I don't use any security (WEP/WPA).
I hide my SSID.
I use MAC filtering for all my devices.

I'm sure I'm missing some devices, but that should give you the general mix of wired/wireless devices that I use.  I'm single with visits from my son every other weekend, so network traffic is not that high at my house.  I've had this router for a couple years now and didn't use to have this problem.  I've been updating the firmware, and I suspect this problem happened after on one those updates.  I just don't know which one.  Also, I didn't use to have any neighbors with Wireless Routers (that I could detect), but recently there have been 2 who have gotten them.  I was hoping this was a problem that D-Link was aware of, but that does not seem to be the case.  I would hate to have to go out and buy a new router (not D-Link).  Have other people had similar problems?  Any suggestions on how to go about troubleshooting this issue?

Try changing the WiFi mode to Single mode G to test then try Mixed G and N to test. If you don't have any need for N, keep Single mode G. Let us know. Can turn off protected WiFi and Wish if you don't need any wifi streaming.

Thanks for the reply.  I found all of those options you mentioned.  I'll try each of them, and post back what I find.

I'm going to disable WISH first, and see if that helps.  Then I'll try each of the modes (I use mixed rigt now).

 Hello,

It's been awhile since my original post, and unfortunately the problem still persists.  I've tried the different combinations, but my wireless still drops periodically.  Wired connections are fine.  It's been really frustrating.  I'm getting close to deciding to go out and buy a different router.  I still see quite a few people posting about having this same problem with this router.  Does D-Link acknowledge that there is a problem with this router?  I have not seen a new firmware release for this router in a while.  Are they working on another firmware?  If they are aware of the problem and are working to fix it, I'll hold off on buying another router.

Any other WiFi or cordless phones in the area?
When your testing, did you try single mode G with just one WiFi device on and ALL others OFF?
Try setting security to WPA to and AES only to test. Test with out security?

I use a WiFi analyzer Android app to look for interference, and one neighbor has WiFi using channel 6.  I'm using channel 11. I don't have any cordless phones, but I'm not about to go knocking on my neighbor's doors to ask them about their cordless phones.

I'm not using any security. Going to only G will not do me any good because I mostly use N. I almost always only use one WiFi device at a time.

I notice the wireless drop outs mostly when I'm either watching a video (Netflix or Personal Network Streaming) using my Xbox 360 in my bedroom at night, and/or when I use my iPad first thing early morning before work. When it happens I'll use my Android phone to check the signal, and it is not there. Wired connections are fine. A reboot of the router always fixes it... for a while.

Don't take this wrong, because I really do appreciate you posting, but I'm done trying all of these crazy combinations to try and debug this product. I simply don't have the time. What I would really like to hear from you, is if D-Link is aware of this problem and if they are working on a firmware fix for it. This problem has been out there for a very long time. Thanks.

Does this happen with others wireless devices?
Does it happen if using G only to test?
Set security for WPA and AES only to test.

Disable the Upnp in advanced networking.  That worked for me.  I had a conflict that two computers were using the same ip address.  If that works it should be OK to re-enable upnp if the conflict is fixed automatically.

Thanks for the reply, but I had already tried that with no luck.  I finally broke down and bought a Belkin router. So far, no dropouts what so ever. Works perfectly. I do appreciate the replies, but I'm pretty confident that this particular router (DIR-655) simply does not work properly. I have owned a Linksys, D-Link, and now Belkin router. The only one that didn't work was the D-Link. That leaves a bad taste in my mouth, and I doubt I will ever buy another D-Link product.

I've had this same problem with my router.  I actually starting having this problem when I dropped my cable with Time Warner but kept just the internet service.  I thought maybe it was the reason for it but I don't lose connection from Time Warner, it's just with the wireless portion of the router.

I was lead to believe it was possibly my router was getting old and needed to be replaced, so, I went out and bought a brand new one (dlink 655) with the hope these things might change.  It worked well for a while but then it started doing the same routine as the old router.

I'm close to leaving the dlink family and going to another brand as well but I really don't want to.  I've gone with dlink now for about 8 - 10 years now and have been happy with them and have no real issues up until now. :'(

I will try the ideas in this thread but seeing dack70's replies doesn't leave much hope with me already.  I wanted to reply to this thread in hopes there might be a solution that has come about since June.

What HW version is your router?
What FW version is currently loaded?

Things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off QoS options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What wireless modes are you using? A and B modes aren't used much any more.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area?

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

I'm having the same problem on firmware 1.35NA.  My wireless keeps dropping and it's really annoying.  I swear it does it like 2 times every 30 min or so.  I downloaded firmware 1.33 and tried to downgrade but it wouldn't let me.  Are there any other solutions or if dlink knows about this issue?

Why do people keep asking if "Dlink knows about this problem"? ::chuckle:: We are not Dlink folks :-)

Because some of the users think that DLink is monitoring these forums. Maybe, maybe not. Were here as users of owners of there products and here to help each other out. It would be helpful if some of users would understand this and take some responsibility and be more proactive, specially those who think they know what they are doing, on helping us help them and give us more details as to help us fully understand there problems. I get tired of people saying that some questions we pose to them are not "RELEVANT". In order for us to help each other out fully, WE NEED THE DETAILS, people. Help us help you. Be proactive in giving details so we can better help you solve the problem. If you think the questions and suggestions posed to you are not "RELEVANT" then I recommend you contact DLink directly. Have a great evening.

Back to the subject now.  ;)
