Extremely slow speeds with router. Any fixes?
« on: March 06, 2011, 09:45:09 AM »

I just installed the newest firmware (Hardware Version: B1 Firmware Version: 2.01NA) to my router because before hand my router is getting very low speeds. But with the new firmware and factory reset it is still slower than ever and when I connect directly to the modem the speeds are fine, obviously, but with the router it's slow....too slow. Any ideas on how to fix this?

No need to post same question in two threads.  Put all your info here so we can keep your item separate from the other topic.

It is slow wired. Like I said, when I am connected through the modem its right where it should be at about 12mbs, but through the router it's barely at 2mbs. I found an earlier topic that seemed to have had the same problem as me, and I put my settings to what it was said on that topic, but it is still slow. I updated my network adapter driver through realtek. I called my ISP and they said there is no problems with the connection on their part.

This is the topic I was looking at from earlier.  http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=19906.0

But it did nothing to help any speed issues I am having. I also have an RMA ready if nothing else...

What ISP service do you have? DSL or Cable?
What ISP modem do you have? Stand alone or built in router?

Have you done a factory reset on the router?
Power down the ISP Modem then back on? THen power on the router?
Are you using Advanced DNS services option on the router? Try with it turn off?
Make sure your getting Primary and 2ndary DNS ip addresses under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Set a static reserved DHCP IP address for your devices.

Also check you LAN card on the PC. Make sure the settings are set to Auto Obtain IP/DNS addressing.
Make sure the drivers are up to date.
Swap out cables to make sure cabling is good.

Let us know.

I have Cable internet through a company called Mediacom. My ISP modem is an RCA which is also brand new, my router is brand new DIR-655 not even a month old yet. I did do a factory reset when I upgraded the firmware. I did power down the modem and back on, same with router.

I am not sure on the Advanced DNS or how to make sure the DNS ip addresses are Setup/Internet/Manual, or how to do the static reserved DHCP.

I just upgraded my lan card before this post. I now swapped my ethernet cables also before this post.

Log in to the router and go to Setup/Internet/Manual:
2nd section should be Advanced DNS services check box, uncheck it if it's there.

3rd section down you see DNS IP addressing information. Make sure these are being filled in. If not, go to the Status/Device Info/Wan section and you'll find these under the Wan section of the router. Copy and paste these or write them down and put these in to the Setup/Internet/Manual section.

Setting a static IP address, go to the Setup/Networking section on the router.
Look in the last section, Number of Dynamic DHCP Clients.
You can see the connected devices. Find the one for your PC, by Mac address or IP address. Select the Reserve work link. This will auto fill the Add DHCP Reservation section. You can give it a name so it's easily identifiable. Can even change the IP here if you don't like the one it has already. Leave it if you wish.

Select Save.

Check the speed with the WiFi turned off?
Change the firewall settings to OFF, then try with changing the TCP and UDP to Endpoint Independent and test.

Any chance you can take this router to a friends or neighbors and test to see the speeds?

I presume that if your still seeing the same speeds after all this, It's possible that the router could be bad.  :-\

Ryan if you restored a saved config after upgrading that could be part of the problem do a factory reset and configure ot manually.
