Connected our Brother MFC-8820D printer/scanner/fax directly to one of the 4 Ethernet ports on the back of the DIR-655 in our new install with this router, and all computers can print to it, whether connected via an Ethernet cable or via wireless, but none of the printers can scan. We just get an error message. Scanner driver is installed on all computers. Same printer worked fine via Ethernet on a Windows small business server for printing and scanning. Windows server no longer used or connected. Only DIR-655 as we are dumbing down and getting rid of our Windows server and have gone to a NAS solution connected to the DIR-655.

What can we do to make the scanning work on our Multifunction printer?

Try setting up a Static reserved IP address for the printer on the router. In fact try do this for all of your devices.

What is the error message your seeing when you try to scan?

you may have to reinstall the brother software suite for it to re-establish the proepr settings for your new set up.

All our printers including the Brother MFC have static IP addresses, such as 192.168.0.107. First thing we did was to delete the old printer drivers and scanner drivers and re-install Brother suite fresh from the original CD. All printers (4 of them) print fine, including the brother.

When opening the scanner driver in Scanners and Faxes and clicking on test scanner, a dialog box come up called "Test failed": "The test failed because the device is not available. Verify connection and try again." In the Properties dialog box for the scanner, on the Network Setting tab, I chose "specify your machine by name" and then browse. Scanner was found with a Node name of BRN_369089 and the same IP address 192.168.0.105 and the correct model MFC-8820D. However selecting this just gives the same "Test failed" dialog box. In the General tab for the scanner, the Scanner Status reads: Status: Device Ready, On Port: AUTO, and resolution: 300x600 DPI.

When double clicking on the Brother scanner icon, the scanner and Camera Wizard dialog box opens. Clicking on Preview which used to work fine now shows a traveling bar, waiting for scanner, and then another dialog box comes up and says: An error occurred during preview. If the scanner is being used, please wait for it to complete the task, and then click Preview.

Are your PCs setup for static IP addresses as well on the router?

How is the printers setup for IP addressing? Are they entered in on the printer or setup on the router?
It's preferred to set all static reservations on the router and set the devices to Obtain IP addressing Automatically.

Are you using any 3rd party Firewall SW by chance?

We have PC's connecting both via Wireless and via wired connections. Wired connection PC is set to "Obtain an IP address automatically". None of the PC's can scan. All can ping the IP address of the MFC-8820D.

Printers are set to static IP addresses via the printer setup menus. Drivers find the printers themselves when told to search for network connected printers at the correct IP addresses we have set on them.

No 3rd party Firewall. MSE virus scanner. Otherwise only Windows stuff.

I also just downloaded latest (2005) driver suite from Brother's site, and also their un-install program. I ran the un-install program which found the device driver at the 192.168.0.105 address, and then the install program for printer and scanning drivers, such that everything is as clean and new as possible. All on XP Pro SP3 on all computers.

Forgot to add about how the DIR-655 is set up.

Enable DHCP Server box is checked with a range of 192.168.0.100 to 199.
Number of DHCP clients is shown as 10, of which only 2 of the 4 printers connected and working are shown. List shows 4 wireless laptops, 2 wireless PC's, 1 wired PC for a total of 7 PC's, then there is one NAS LaCie network hard drive, and 2 printers for a total of 10. The Brother MFC is not listed, nor is our Xerox workgroup printer. But both are printing.

I would try this, remove the static IP addresses from the printers and set the printer to Obtain IP address Automatically as well as your PCs.
Go in to the router and set up static reserved IP addresses for ALL of the printers and the PCs, wired and wireless. Try again. You can keep the same IP addresses for the printers on the router. This will make sure you don't have to reinstall the printer SW thats already mapped to those IP addresses on the printers.
I would uninstall the printer SW and reinstall just to make sure the IP addresses are setup correctly in the drivers on the PCs just in case the IPs are changed.

Hi descartesfool,

During the initial install of the Brother MFC, did you first, set up the Brother via the USB Cable?

Is the Brother, connected to the Router, by Ethernet or by a Wireless Connection to the Router?

What software for scanning are you using with the Brother?

Are all devices connected to the same Workgroup?

Note: Unless the Brother is connected to the Router, via Ethernet Cable, you won't be able to scan from the Brother to the Computer. The Brother Machine must be listed in the Control Panel's Scanners and Cameras, to initial a scan from the Computer.

Brother is set to DHCP enabled.Brother MFC is connected directly to an 8 port Ethernet switch which is conneted with an Ethernet cable to the DIR-655. removed and re-intstalled Brother drivers from original CD. Printing works as before, scanner does not using Propertires dialog box Test Scanner button.

So I tried something new. Opened up the Network Setting tab on the Scanner Properties dialog box. Software from CD had set it to "Specify your machine by name" radio button and showed a Node Name of Brothe_33699 or something similar, with the IP address greyed out and 192.168.0.112. So I clicked on the radio button to try the Specify your machine by address and left the address as it was shown. Now it works.

Hope this helps someone else. Thanks.

Kinda looks like the Mfr SW isn't setting up the printer correctly. I would also recommend downloading a newer version, if available, from the Mfr site. Ya, think they would set that up correctly during the installation of there SW.  ::)

Just FYI. I had downloaded the latest software from Brother and had tried that, and it installs the same way as the original CD. However that setup worked when it was connected to the Windows server. It just didn't work with the DIR-655 as configured. Once I set the Network to use the specific IP address rahter than the Node Name itfound on the netwrok, it worked.

Ok, well sounds like you found the fix. Just have to specify the address. Odd that the SW isn't getting set up correctly in this manor using this configuration.
