Tweaking and Optimizing
« on: March 13, 2011, 07:38:52 AM »

I was reading the other thread about the dude who got worse ping rates with his new DGL-4500.

Furry posted this optimizer link: http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php

So, I ran it on my notebook and applied the fixes.  Are there any other tips/tricks to do?

You really don't want to start messing around in the registry and such unless you know what your doing. The main reason I think the there is a issue with pings and the DGL is Gamefuel gives lower priority to ICMP traffic so you get a false positive. TCP Optimizer mostly optimizises for throughput though. And I think it maxed at at 20Mb. Super User friendly though. Cablenut is a bit more powerful, but its problematic with Vista and up. You may find this site handy though.

PS. Do you actually have a 4500? And are you having any problem with actual lag in a game? More then usual and at all times? Don't fall for the Ping in the little red dress. Free your mind. :-)

Harry, no, I have dial up.  Of course I have a 4500!   :D

It came with 1.21 and I flashed it to 1.23.  I don't have any ping issues, I was just curious about any tweaks or anything to get the most out of my setup since there's a lot about it I don't know.

My ping is generally between 15 and 20, FYI.

You have dial up?!? You mean DSL? If you actually mean dial up then damn, thats your problem right there. Even V90 is no where near enough bandwidth for multiplayer gaming, even if the latency is low. How did you even get the router to work with dial up? I am confused. LOL

Hey, don't you know anything Harry? DIAL UP is the new broadband.  :P

I still have my Motorola 14.4 baud modem. Anyone else can beat that?

Harry - LOL!!!  I'm kidding, dude!  I have Charter cable 25/3.  I was pulling your leg.  :P

Furry - I was trying to think of a dial up modem and model but couldn't, LOL!  "Dial up is the new broadband."  LMAO!

Well, it's better than nothing man. LOL.

Sounds like your system is up and running. You should enjoy it for a long time now. I know I've been enjoying mine.

Also have to remember and keep in time, your system connected to the internet is only as good as the ISP provider and there service. If there service isn't good or always going down or there having issue, don't blame the router or modem. Make sure the line comming into the house from the telephone pole or ground hub box is good and clean. There alot of issues out there that surround signal quality and people are quick to mostly blame the router. You've got to make sure everything is working and connected correctly. My 2 cents.

Good advice, Ben-Furr.

I have horrible speed differences from my ISP.  It doesn't matter if I'm wired or wireless.   It ranges from 20 to 3 down.  Up is always close to 3 which is what the plan is (25/3).

I've called them several times but I think it's a congestion issue.  It's a DOCSIS 3.0 modem but we don't have the 3.0 service out here yet.

I am getting the 4500 restarting itself every once in a while.  The last time was 2 days ago.

On another note.  Here's something really odd.  If I use the DNS addresses/servers that my ISP provides, I can't access www.tenda.cn

But if I use some of the recommended servers through those speed programs, I can access the website.

What wireless devices do you have connected to the router? What wireless modes are you using? Does the router restart on it's own if you test with out the WiFi on?

Is the router restarting entirely or just the WiFi?

We have about 14 devices.  2 iPhones, 7 computers, 3 xboxes, 1 ps3 and a wireless printer.  Mixed G&N, 2.4GHz,  We have 2 cordless land line phones, 5.8Ghz for both.  It's on channel 3 which no other neighbor is on.

Everything is wireless.  I did not restart the cable modem the last time I reconfigured the router.  Do you think that could have something to do with it?

No, don't think the cable modem has anything to do with the restart.

Do the logs say anything on the router? Check the modem logs to if you can.

What version of iPhones do you have?

The iPhones are 4's.

I have no router log data because the only thing I have check marked is Firewall & Security, System, and Critical.

The modem logs don't all have the day listed.  It's odd and random.  I don't remember when it reset but I'll monitor it from now and let you know.

First, Ha! I was going to say man...daaamn. But also, do you know I actually knew someone who had to game on a really slow DSL line. He lived on some island off of Australia and his DSL has a cap of 150Kbps. Not dialup, but close enough. And all his traffic was routed through Korea. Guess how bad his lag was?

Yea, modem logs are temperamental. Alot of times the time and dates are wrong, they can not records some errors, lose logs, and many times scare you with important sounding errors that are usually quite normal. The only think you should really look out for are errors marked critical, if they are in abundant. And even then there are exceptions.

As for the DNS, yea, that happens sometimes. To be fair, .CN is adding and removing domains constantly. They are almost always on the top 10 on the charts. Aren't they like the China's FCC? China=Censorship so they keep the DNS people busy. I bet if you had waited a day or two it would have fixed itself. Looks like its in most name servers as of now.

And Furry is right, I doabt a modem problem would cause the router to reset. Now a modem problem might make the router "require" a reset, but thats different. And while I agree with Furry that a router is only as good as your ISP, try not to swing too far the other way and assume everything is your ISP too. ::grin:: If your seeing speed decrease during peak hours, that could just be the nature of the beast, so to speak. You can check your signal levels on the same page as your logs, and hope it might be signal fluxiation, that they can fix. If its the usage is peaking past capacity, not a whole lot they will do about that. Its like the highway. The traffic needs to be REALLLLY bad for the state to consider putting in another highway. With that said though, if you find the speed decrease/increase to be related to usage in your area, you could look into getting a DOCSIS 3.0 modem. You should research thoroughly before doing so though. Some ISP have issues with DOCSIS 3.0, and some have issues with just particular modems or even firmware versions of certain modems. Your best bet is to try DSLReports, find your ISP and ask what they suggest. Last, before you upgrade to DOCSIS 3.0, make sure your signal levels are damn near perfect. With DOCSIS 2.0 you have alot more flexibility but as you start playing with channel bonding, different QAM modulations, and other systems that come into play with D3, things can get bad fast. Pay the most attention on your Upstream SNR, which you can get by calling your ISP. Should be as high as you can get it.

Blahh, I just blabbed a bunch of stuff. Hope you found some of it useful.

Thanks Harry, a lot of good info.

I actually have a Ubee DOCSIS 3.0 modem (bought from Charter) but DOCSIS 3.0 service isn't in my area yet.  So, no channel bonding happening here.  Just channel 1.

I know once the service is available I shouldn't have the fluctuations I'm getting now.  But the worst speeds I'm getting are still equal to the best I had with DSL.
