more problems, NO subtitles !!! "finally solved !!!"
« on: January 17, 2009, 12:47:23 AM »

I run it only as a MCE
connectin: wired (for now)

1) NO subtitles (.srt) , dont know how to turn them on. movies run without subtitles although i have subtitles with the same name as the movie file. they work fine if i just play them on my computer, without media center, just media player.  ffdshow with subtitle filter is on. should i install directsub filter of some kind?

2) quality is disappointing just as i feared. i guess i could live with that. maybe i was hoping for "better then pc" quality. but really, what's wrong with it, does it run on 16 bit colors? why the blocking effect. is there a way to increase the color depth?

3) cant measure the connection, because when i try to tune network performance, it states "unable to connect" . though the connection works fine. maybe tunes only wireless connections?

4) cant play .mkv containers, but just saw that this has already been discussed.

5) when the player loads up, i need to leave it alone for 15-20 minutes, otherwise half of the files on my library will say "finished playing" before even beginning to play. after letting it sit for a while it will recognize the files in the library. music dont have that problem, only video.
** Can i leave my media extender ON all the time?

6) how to turn the volume UP???   even if i pump the TV volume to max the sound it's still low. how come there is no volume control on the remote?

if anyone could help with any of these, pls do so :) i know the sub problem has been resolved. i am sure i am not doing something right...

thanks

First question what version of the firmware are you running on your unit?

1.02, the latest. upgraded automatically

by the way , i take back the comment that the quality is bad! finally i was able to run a HD content (xvid, avi container)... it's something else :). the blocking effect its due to the large LCD TV that i use, i guess...

What media server are you running to stream videos to the DSM-750? If the Media server does not support .srt files the DSM-750 will not be able to see the files to display subtitles.

Please see this link:

i have tried: tversity, media player sharing, media center as an extender

i have also tired, having the same name as the video file except for the extension
example: movie.avi, movie.srt

also having the name as the video file (including extension) but also including .srt
example: movie.avi, movie.avi.srt

also tried different options in my ffshow filter

also tired running transcoded video from tversity while ffshow subtitle filter is ON

also tired vobsub filter as an additional subtitle app.

non have any success

P.S. i noticed that while playing video and in media lounge mode, on the remote, pressing the left button twice and then the OK button, a bold blue text appears on the left upper corner of the display stating "without subtitles!".  What is that, it sounds like there is a code or something :) on the remote to turn subtitles on or off.

Please see page 51 in the latest manual version

Link for manual:
ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Medialounge/DSM750/Manual/dsm750_manual_120.zip

Have you tried the D-Link media server available to download from the DSM-750 support website?

YEAH :D, finally.   subtitles work with D-Link Media Server.

thanks ECF, i didint even know that the device had a dedicated soft for it.

so i guess tversity doesnt support subtitles then???

i noticed that all subtitles need to be in a UTF-8 text format. no biggie, i can convert the text from ANSI as soon as i download a subtitle file.

btw, i can play vobs and x264 in a mkv container nativaly (no transcoding) on my device with tversity. all i have is k-lite full codec pack installed at default values. i didnt install the extra codecs that tversity suggested at setup. thats wierd !   neither dsm media lounge soft or Media center will play x264

They work natively meaning the device can play the file by itself it does not need software to transcode or anything. The device has no problem playing them just slap the file on a USB drive and plug it in and play.

The issue you are seeing is that no media server programs yet support .mkv but the DSM-750 does.

yea i figured it out last night got it working on the usb drive other then the slow response from the video loading it works great hope to see the media servers supporting it soon it would help alot rather then transfering all my mkv's to another drive.

tversity supports it. i can play .mkv fine from it, but doesnt support subtitles.
i am trying to find out how to embed subtitles into mkv without having to re-encode the video now, instead of searching for a way to make the mkv play on the dlink media server

Yeah me too I just want to stream them from my PC and NAS. I feel your pain putting them on a USB drive first to play the video but it works nicely.
